When launching games DOSBox seems to always ignore the relevant .conf files.

I have been trying to get various GOG DOS games to use a specific MIDI device. At first I thought perhaps it was an issue with my hardware configuration; however, after testing a changing a whole slew of other settings in the relevant conf files in testing, it appears as if the .conf files are ignored entirely.

For example, with Dark Forces in DOSBox I have modified the dosbox_DF.conf in the game directory and settings changed in it do not take effect. I have also tried editing the generic %AppData%/Local/DOSBox/dosbox-0.74.conf file and changes in that don't seem to do anything either.

The ultimate goal is to get the games to use my Roland JV-1010 for MIDI playback; however, they don't seem to want to abide by the changes made under the [midi] tag. I have attempted disabling MIDI playback entirely for troubleshooting and that seems to be ignored. I have setting my midiconfig to the relevant hardware id(Found by mixer /listmidi) but that doesn't do anything

Anyone else have this issue?

Ran into a similar issue with settings made on a modified .conf not working on a Windows system using DOSBOX 0.74
Step 1:
You need to copy that modified dosbox_DF.conf into the DOSBOX directory that GOG auto creates when installing games.

Step 2: Rename the modified dosbox_DF.conf to dosbox.conf

Have you tried that game using https://dosbox-staging.github.io/v0-76-0/ ? You have a lot more choices for MIDI in general there.
Is it only the midi settings that are ignored, or anything you change in the dosbox conf file, e.g. the screen size, renderer etc.?

Are you using the Galaxy client to install and play the games, or the offline installers? If Galaxy, is it possible that Galaxy detects the config file has been altered, hence it replaces it with the original one? Do you still see your changes in the config file afterwards?

I use only offline installers and at least so far I've been successful changing the midi settings...

Edit dosbox_DF_single.conf by replacing
DARK.EXE
with
imuse.exe

Then start the configuration process with the "Launch STAR WARS™ - Dark Forces" link.
Choose Roland under Enhanced Menu -> Music.
