Well, they don't need to reinvent the wheel here. But there's a difference between tweaking the wheel and replacing the wheel with a bowl of mashed potatoes.

A lot of people spouting ignorance masquerading as old gamer wisdom. I can't comment on the campaign length, but even if it's not that long there's definite replay value as there are more secrets to find, powerups to apply, and more interesting ways of outright destroying your enemies. I'm definitely very positive about it so far.
hyperagathon clearly hasn't played the game. It's still about shooting demons in corridors. It's just a lot better at it than any previous Doom.
Oh and there's a pretty solid editor provided too. So expect a lot of user generated content. No doubt someone will port over Knee Deep in the Dead soon enough.

I was hoping this was going to be that 1 AAA-game GOG was going to release.

What I've heard so far is that this game is more like a traditional shooter (lite storyline, no regen, lots of enemies in big areas etc).

I'm just waiting for someone to remake Doom 4 using the Doom 1 engine. =)

I watched TotalB and theRadBrad play some of it. From what I saw it was indeed a very fast-paced shooter, in a similar setting to Doom 3 (metallic space station) but more open areas. There horror aspect and story have been toned back quite a bit (again, from what I saw) in favor of pure gameplay.

I actually liked Doom 3's emphasis on horror and the slow pace of the beginning of the game, but some of that may be nostalgia and the fact that I didn't play Doom 1 or 2 before 3.

When the game was first shown, I remember the Brutal Doom guy being quite annoyed by the new Marine design, saying it was a mix of Mastar Chief and the Nanosuit from Crysis, but I must say I quite enjoyed the new armor design.

What I didn't like was the fairly generic multiplayer armor models. I also really think they should have given the new Doomguy a face. Seriously, it annoys me greatly that he doesn't have a face at all.

Probably the worst thing about D3 was those goddamn personal device things with messages and recordings, all they did was slow down the gameplay.

To all the people saying this looks like Halo or CoD. What fucking Halo or CoD did YOU play? I don't recall any of them being anything like this...

Fast-paced, violent, gory. This game is forcing you to move or die. It's fantastic so far.

I've only played the first Halo on PC and I can say I was moving around a lot during fights.

I can't decide how I feel about those. On the one hand I thought it was neat how they gave people a good reason to listen to them by putting in number codes to access health and weapons, and I recall some of the info about what happened leading up to the incident somewhat interesting, but yeah, in general I hate reading in games, especially when it tries to make me give a shit about people or situations I don't care about.

Yeah, but not at this pace, jumping around in the air and bouncing off walls. Admittedly the only Halo I played to completion was the first on PC. But I've seen more than enough gameplay from the others.

Basically, if you want a fast FPS, this is good shit. Don't like the glory kills? Turn them off. Plenty of options here.
