Ugh.. just hooked up my new widescreen monitor... I guess it takes getting used to. I definitely don't like playing Fallout 4 and seeing the desktop off to the right of where I'm playing. It's distracting.. and ugly..

May not be willing to put in the time to get used to it either. I just don't much like it. Obviously YMMV. LOL it's time like this I'm glad I have a son, two nephews, and a niece who all use puters. One of them will be happy to take this monster.

LOL even my browser leaves black areas of screen on both sides. And if you force it to take up the whole screen it streeeeeetches and looks U.G.L.Y.

You rockin' a 4K monitor there, OFG? I don't quite understand the comment about the desktop off to the right when you play Fallout 4. (For comparison, I have a 1920x1200 monitor and Fallout 4 looks awesome on it).

I think that is the perfect resolution for a monitor. Pity the industry disagrees and charge twice as much as for a 1920x1080 :-(

No kidding. I love my 1920x1200. My other monitor is a 1920x1080 and I don't like it nearly as much (but I don't game on that one, so no big deal).

It mostly depends what you are using monitor for. For example, in some games 16:9 proportion is better as you can see much more on both sides (left / right).

Yes, certainly it depends but you can do smaller resolution on a bigger screen, not the other way around.

It's a matter of proportion, not resolution. Some games do not depend on resolution and display the same view in many resolutions (of the same proportions) - view is just less or more detailed. Change of display proportion creates much more visible difference.

Gif needed to have same width in all proportions so that's why they are here. It also shows that you see more when playing on 16:9 monitor than on 16:10.

Thats an odd way to scale the image though. Could as well just fill the screen and extend the upper and lower edges. Also, just set 1920x1080 as resolution while gaming, enjoy 1200 when working. No real advantage to use a 16:9 screen...

I had this with fallout 4 on my widescreen. You need two things, flawless widescreen which will be top hit on a google, and a mod to sort out the menus. Often on widescreen the height is related to the width so you get menus which are nice and wide but height is well off the screen. I have had this with a fair few games, and you may also need to alter ini files. Is it worth it overall, I think so. It's just a small extra setup step for each game.
If you need further help getting f4 specifically running with your widescreen, just shout and I will dig out my specific mod list which I played through with, ran flawless with a bit of tweaking.

No, that's not an odd way - that's the most popular way. Most games scale your view in that way - 16:10 does NOT add more space up and down, it cuts your view on left and right side.

You can't set 1920x1080 on 16:9 without black bars or distortions.

Yes, there are, as I said above. 16:9 is also better for watching movies (without black bars) and such monitors are cheaper than 16:10.

Yes but, technically, they could just zoom out a little ;) But I guess its for competitive reasons or something. At least there is a FOV option with many shooters.

Personally I don't mind the black bars, barely notice them really and prefer the higher format a lot when working. Actually thought about pivoting a screen when using long lists of options or when im using print formats. But I can imagine that it becomes less of a problem with resolutions of 2560 and up, true.
