jamyskis: I would actually remind you that the series "Elementary" switched genders for Dr. Watson, nobody batted an eyelid and it turned out to be an inspired decision.

Also, M became a woman in the James Bond films in 1995, and Judi Dench owned the role (useless bit of knowledge: in 50 years of Bond films, she's the only person to say the word "fuck" in any of them).
Never watched that series but a female Holmes would be unrealistic,I think.

Never watched doctor who but was tempted on dipping my feet in it to see if it's something that would tickle my fancy.
any specific season good to watch?

I would say start with the first (from 2005). It's a good way to get into the specific tone of the series. And the continuity between season 1 and 2 is nice. In fact, season 1 to 4 make a nice ark (and are often considered the best).

Either season 1 (2005) or season 5 (sort of a soft reboot with a new showrunner) are both good jumping on points. It's probably the best to start with the first one, although it's really not untill season 2 that the new, "modern" series really hit it's stride. There's also plenty of great episodes from the "classic" seasons (it's all in continuity, the seasons numbering got rebooted only for convenience sake), but I guess it's better to start with the new stuff and if you like then check out the classics, as it would be a titanic undertaking the watch the whole thing.

Actually, I believe it would actually be an impossible undertaking, as a few of the early episodes were lost when the BBC taped over the tapes.

It's not impossible as the audio recordings of all episodes were preserved. All of the "lost" episodes are available in some form. What clips are available inter-spliced with still pictures for some, but it's still watchable. The biggest issue is the sheer volume.

I don't like the idea of a female Doctor because the character is traditionally male and I hate the current pandering trend of gender swapping established characters. Yes, I'm well aware it's been canonically possible all this time (For the record I don't mind Missy at all, I thought making the Master female was a good way to introduce this concept without messing with the Doctor himself) but if one were to introduce a female doctor, now is definitely NOT the time to do it.

With all the extremist feminist and SJW insanity going on right now, and the BBC being essentially run by these people... it reeks of pandering and pushing of agenda...

Doctor Who is my favourite TV series by far and with the current social climate I am very concerned, I sincerely hope whoever is behind this has genuine, non-ideologically-driven intentions

If I'm not mistaken, some have been getting animated versions as well.

I didn't see anything older than 2005 nor this years season. I liked Tennant and Smith, though the latter took some getting used to. Capaldi I never liked much at all, so won't miss him. I have no problem with the Doctor being female as such, fits the story, whatever, and am cautiously optimistic that it will be fine. In a sane world the change of showrunner should be the bigger news.

But a part of me is quite afraid that it will end up being just a gimmick to substitute for a story and that one can't even say it aloud because stop hating women you neanderthal.

The Face of Bo as a Doctor, anyone?

For myself, I'm interested in the possible new dynamics a female Doctor will bring to the character. Let's face it, sexism and misogyny seems to be still rife - so how will a thousands year old person deal with it?
I hope it won't become a raison d'etre, but some focus on it would be realistic.
Also, how would a feminine sensibility - like new teeth - affect the Doctor's essential character?

However, the new showrunner, Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker could prove ultimately incompatible, either to each other or the show.
I'll suspend judgement until I actually see an episode or ten.

Yeah it's a huge damn series so knowing a good point to start is good thing haha
