I like shooters, in principle. I like uncomplicated "go in there, put bullets in the bad guys / things / hostile entities, survive" gameplay. I think it's funny to run around with big guns that make nice boomy sounds and plug critters in the face.
But I feel that the classic shooter is sort of being replaced with sort of more artsy shooters that want to do more than just put a player in a big environment with tactical options, a lot of enemies to shoot, and a lot of guns to shoot enemies with.
That's one of the things I really liked about Borderlands 2. It wasn't complex or artsy or something that took itself remotely seriously. It was just a game with a lot of guns and a lot of targets to use those guns on. Of course all the loot grindy aspects was meh, and most tactics revolved around close range encounters because everything spawned up real close or could close ground real fast. On top of that the damage mechanics became real wonky to promote more loot grinding and most of the guns you found were different kinds of terrible. But still, it was fun.
Doom 2016, it's fun in principle, but it's too much Serious Sam or Painkiller style arena fighting. You walk into an empty area, trigger a spawn script, all kinds of mayhem follow. And I really prefer when I can scope out enemies ahead of time, snipe some of them ahead of time, and generally decide my own approach and pacing.
In terms of MP, well, options abound but my interest in MP shooters peaked back in the days of Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, and Counter Strike beta. It declined rapidly thereafter and hasn't really picked up since.
These days, I'm playing more TBS and RPG than I'm playing shooters, though. Got quite a few shooters I haven't played, though, just simply haven't gotten around to it yet.
