My impression of the GOG forum membership over the years has been a tendency towards RPGs, strategy games, adventures, and puzzles. GOG doesn't sell much in the way of popular modern shooter games, so it's not surprising that there aren't tons of vocal shooter fans. I'm curious whether you folks enjoy FPS/TPS games though, and if so which ones you like.

I enjoyed the Halo series, but I was playing for the story by Halo 3; I think I found the books a more enjoyable experience overall. I also liked Half Life 2 and its poorly named sequels (they should really be Half Life 3), but obviously Episode 3 is never going to materialise.

I've never played Call of Duty or Battlefront. The first Gears of War was okay, but the second lost my interest and I put it down. Shooters mostly just seem to pass me by, not my crowd.

I play mostly shooter games. There is to much talking in RPGs. I don´t like talking. I prefer to resolve conflicts by shooting things in the face.

I used to speedrun Doom 1 and 2 back in the late 90s (The good ones, DOOM 2016 is a good Speedrun game, too but it pales in comparision).

But well, Doom 1 and 2 are enough FPS games to last a lifetime. You should try out Russian Overkill (maybe with Ketchup) with the Slaughterfest WADs. If you have a strong PC thats probably the best FPS experience you will be getting out of any FPS games. Its pure FPS fun!

A few years ago i still loved Quake 3 so much I almost spent almost like half my lifetime worshipping that game. Moved on to MOBAs for now.

Other than that, I began to love shooters that are over-the-top and arcadish. Right now I'm kinda obsessed with Devil Daggers and I want to reach 300 seconds at some point (I'm kinda close to that).

Yes i do, i have a preference for RPG's and turn based strategy games and i tend to avoid Point and Click Adventure mostly, Puzzle Games but shooters is sort of an middle ground for me as i like "story based" or if they have good atmosphere or a decent/fun campaign.

I enjoy the Metro Games, Doom for the gameplay and Shadow Warrior both the original and new for the silliness among other things.

Would you like to expand on that?

Call of Duty 1&2 are fantastic. CoD4 is decent, but once it became the go-to game for online multiplayer, they stopped giving a **** about the campaigns, and every game since has been verying degrees of rubbish.

But my favourite FPS of all time is still, and most likely always will be, the masterpiece that is No One Lives Forever.

Oh, I forgot to mention the 1999/2000 Alien vs. Predator game. I absolutely loved that. Though I suppose that's not "modern" by any stretch of the imagination.

I can only play a good shooter for a few minutes at a time. My nerves can't take the constant barrage for very long. That being said, for those few minutes, when I'm really into it, I achieve gaming Nirvana! :D

If talking about the "typical" FPS then 1-2 decades ago yes. These days not really anymore from besides the one or other peek born out of curiosity or nostalgia. They bore me too quickly.

I usually have had a weak computer for its time so it took a long time before I could run a 3D game well enough to even try any. A friend lent me Call of Duty 2 after finishing it themselves and that was my first FPS, probably also first 3D. I played though it once on every difficulty starting from the bottom (hey, I was new to this kind of games) and have ever since enjoyed the occasional FPS. I think the first one I bought was Battlefield 2 that I played a lot.

I am a bit crazy about Far Cry (six? times through) and liked the first Crysis games quite a bit. Battlefield 2 and Unreal Tournament, both against bots for that quick fix. Crysis 2 hates me who hates its copy protection throwing a tantrum (we need the game here) not allowing me to play it any further (GRRR! I paid for the game, just let me play it!). Every now and then I work on my play-through of Metro 2033, no idea why I only ever seem to stick to it for such short bursts but the same applies to the STALKER games. Uhmm, I have a few in my backlog but want to finish some of the ongoing ones first. Other games were not special to me. Last FPS I shot anyone in was Unreal Gold.

I do play other kinds of games too.

Like racing games or platformers, basic brutal straightforward old school shooters are games that bore me. So, it's not a core gameplay I'm much interested in. However, there are a lot of games belonging to that genre that I love. It's the games that add a gimmick, a new dimension, or a broader gameplay to it. Just like Flood added stick-on-walls to platformers, or Braid added time dimension, or Carmageddon adds exploration and offensive destruction to racing, I enjoyed :

AvP adding Alien horror and elements from the movie.

Nolf adding excellent dialogues, stealth, spy movies spoofing.

Deus Ex adding RPG elements.

Stalker adding exploration and contemplative atmosphere (and not making the world about you).

Borderland and Hellgate London adding diablo-like gameplay (though it eventually gets old).

Outlaws, Far Cry and Just Cause adding open maps and tactical approaches.

Swat 3 adding bloodless arrests and careful tactics.

Dark Corners of the Earth adding maddening terror.

XIII adding cell-shading and comic-book vignettes.

Spec Op the Line added the twisted narrative.

And sometimes the desgn and atmosphere are special enough to hook me, as was the case with Undying.

But it's very rare that a barebones shooty shooter keeps my attention. Doom, Unreal, all these classics leave me very indifferent. The first couple of Call of Duty were nice surprises, I enjoyed them a lot despite of them being just simple linear shootyshooty. I guess it's a case of well done atmosphere, despite of them being terribly unoriginal. Still better than generic scifi humanoid with lasers that this time are called Sk'idjjz and have blue horns instead of pink antennas so they have nothing to do with that other games' Blaärkdz.

Edit : Also loved FEAR with its ringu atmosphere and its excellent AIs, and Max Payne with its noir monologue and wonky bullet time.
