I get veerrryy emotional. That isn't so-n-so out there helping Booker on that Command Deck, that isn't so-n-so hiding in that locker in Outlast, that isn't so-n-so running from that mad dog in Penumbra or so-n-so the crazy driver in Saint's Row-4...it's ME. I'm there. I get so wrapped up in that I become that person. I get tense, forget to breathe, cry, angry...Phew !! Before bed-time I have to find a caalllmm relaxing game or I'd be re-living my life in that game.

Also, please discuss here! I love the story-heavy, emotional games, and am always looking for new ones to play! My current favorites in this genre are The Walking Dead Season 1 and the Cognition series.
Done, by the way if you didn't you should play "The Dig".

I think "emotional things" are different for every person. I've seen movies where almost everyone were crying, while some had a straight poker face ( and no they were not internalizing) :P Sometimes it depends on your own experiences too, I used to despise romantic movies with all my strength, thought that they where obnoxious, boring and targeted to a very specific public to which I didn't belong :P but, then something happened and I started..........liking..........them and it all probably started with "Some Kind of Wonderful".
Even remember when watching "The Goonies" and Andy and Brandon kiss I would thought "eewwww".

Psyringe: I spent half an hour trying to figure out a way to save the companion cube from incineration in "Portal". It's a frigging metal cube with silly pink hearts painted on the sides and it never does anything, ever. But since it was introduced as my "companion" for that level, I felt compelled to save it.

So no, you're not the only one. ;)
I'm going to be labelled the most heartless person in the world for saying this but I felt nothing when I incinerated it accept a mild sense of amusement and relief.
Between GLadDOS hinting that people had gone mad and suffered delusions of the cube threatening violence on themselves and the room where one man had clearly gone mad thanks to his cube it seemed clear to me that if it had any sentience at all the cube was evil, and if not no harm done. I'm clearly in the minority on this :)

You are the most heartless person in the world.

But I don't care, because I have my trusty companion cube to cuddle with. And cake.

After 15 levels of Portal, you still trusted GlaDOS? ;)

By that time, I found the drawings of an alleged madman more trustworthy than whatever she was telling me ...

Might not want to play Cognition, then... ;D

tinyE: Sorry to butt in here with OT, but to this day I tend to get genuinely upset when I lose an NPC in a game. Diablo 2 comes to mind but there are others. It sounds stupid but I really do feel bad even when it isn't my fault, almost like I failed them. Am I the only one here that does?
It does depend on my current mood, but most of the times I play Diablo II I can't get myself to leave that first rogue assigned to me by Kashya and pay for another mercenary. She was given the task to help me get through my trials and I won't have her fail that task by sending her away.
Completed. Cited To The Moon as an example of what makes games emotional: story, characters, music.

Psyringe: Done.

I don't think that the concept "emotional game" is particularly useful, though. Pretty much all games evoke emotions in me in one form or another. If they'd leave me cold, I probably wouldn't play them.

Also, there was this weird question where I had to decide, categorically, whether I'd play a "good" or "evil" character. I have no preference and in fact I prefer games in which clear-cut "good/evil" categories don't even exist. Yet I am required to give an answer, so I tossed a coin.
Yeah that's the one question I had difficulty answering as well. I prefer a game that gives grey options where you have to weight both good and bad for all the options. Even when given a clear choice i prefer doing two run-throughs doing both good and evil.

I assumed that she was just a dusty old computer program running on autopilot. It's only after you escape being turned into cake that she shows any real signs of being self aware ;)

I might be heartless but at least I'm not going to end up headless like you will when your trusty companion cube picks out it's favourite butcher knife!

Right...I played Cognition. I hear it's Walking Dead that's going to have me weeping alligator tears.

genkicolleen: I got this from a friend, and where better to ask about this than here at the GOG forums?

"A friend of mine is writing a Master's thesis on emotional games. :) She's currently gathering answers to several short questions about people who play those games, are interested in them, or have played them by accident.
There are two open questions, but short answers are fine.

I remember she was looking for people aged 30 and younger, but the survey has an option for 30+.

If you have time... could you please take the survey? It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

http://bit.ly/1ozzFUC

Btw if you know anyone under 30 or MALE (!) could you pass the link along? :D For some reason (?) it's hard to find men who play emotional games.
:p"

I did the survey, and it only took me a couple of minutes to complete -- it's very straightforward :D

Sent! Walking Dead is an awesome, awesome choice! :)

Happens the same to me, probably because of my deep imagination, it's like "Rugrats" but with games. So I had a hard time back when I would watch horror movies on fridays on a local tv show called "Viernes 13" ("Friday the 13th") I was always watching it under my blanket, ready to cover myself when something bad was bound to happen to the main character, me and my sister would yell "No, don't go there!" and then covered our faces and our ears and if one of us stopped hearing the screams, would tell the other it was safe to watch, but sometimes the problem was, who was goint to peek first? :P
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I cant think of any emotional games. :(
Games mentioned in this thread so far:
· PORTAL (this game is hardcore poetry!)
· BLACKOUT (Danish game from 1997, description HERE)
· STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC
· THE WALKING DEAD (story-heavy emotional)
· COGNITION (story-heavy emotional)
· MASS EFFECT 2
· FINAL FANTASY VII
· TO THE MOON

There's also this Mix: Games that have elicited genuine emotion from me.

I guess these games have a high emo rating, but I have not played them yet:
SHELTER
TO THE MOON
