Vythonaut: Two to be precise; one on the internal HDD and another one on an external HDD that is used only for keeping backups. When not taking backups, it is stored inside a titanium safe that in turn it is stored in another, bigger tungsten safe, guarded by military dogs and a laser alarm system. Safety first!

I've been backing up to DVD ever since GOG's shit-eating "prank" where they took down the site for the weekend, pretending to be shut down.

You remember that too, huh?

Part of me wishes GOG would do that again just to shake people awake. Or better still, for Steam to go down worldwide for a few days just to show people how being "always online" is a matter of perspective.

I don't have a backup folder, i have a backup hard drive.

I would love to see that happen.

Though sadly my best friend had to go a few weeks without internet while moving house and was unable to play his entire Steam library, but it didn't make him think any differently about the service. :/

Really? He never even complained that he was locked out of his games because of the most stupid service in the world?

That really talks about their userbase and how they give no damn if it means they get shafted.

Having a backup is useful and a great advantage of the DRM-free policy from GOG.
I have all Files saved to an external Drive I hooked up to a Odroid computer, which I also use as a multi-purpose Server.

But I don't have a backup for this backup though.

Not being dependant on a service like steam is a big plus for me.

i think i'm one of the few pc-literate persons i know who still don't have an external HDD. i burn them on CDs. for larger games, i've been uploading them to MEGA(.nz) .

Most of my past purchased titles are kept on DVD discs, but I stopped doing that since I can buy a 1TB hard drive for the price of those spindles. With that said I haven't bought the drive yet and been keeping my games on the PC but it's in the plans since I visit my family and can't spend an entire day without touching a game :)

TT_TT_TT_TT: nope no backup folder here i have to admit. Don't expect gog to go out of business anytime soon so don't really feel the need and it would be requiring a lot of HDD space as i own some of the newer games as well besides the goodies.
Got a really fast internet connection though so i kinda can get all games "on demand" anyway and for the very very unlikely case in the far future that gog closes someday i expect them to notify us in time to backup anyway

nightcraw1er.488: Not picking on you particularly here, but there seems to be this vein of thinking that GOG will always be there. I find it interesting. My one big beef with DRM for instance, that DRM which requires internet, is that at some point it will stop working. Hence relying on GOG being here is pretty much the same crutch.
this. why do people use GOG , if they want implied DRM???

Some items have already been taken away (soundtracks and such, the DOS version of Fallout.)

AFAIK DVDs and CD-ROMs still last longer than any HDD without data corruption. SSDs might be worse than HDDs with their limited write cycles.

as for cost per GB/TB , tape drives are still the best, but who the hell uses tapes thesedays???

Commercial grade tape backups are still used by a lot of big companies to back up their systems, primarily because of cost. I have thought about it a few times myself, create a permanent time point store.

I only care about the games and eventually the manuals, so it's not that a big concern, but you make a valid point. I think i should also at some point start backing up.
