DaCostaBR: I figured I would do it while it's free but wait for the last possible minute, hoping that by then all the kinks had been worked out. With Directx 12 it would eventually be preferable or even required for the AAA new releases to have Windows 10.

The thing is: I really don't want to upgrade. Everything I hear about it just makes it sound worse and worse, such as all the current and older games with performance problems on it, and the constant spying it does on your PC that you can kinda disable but not really. I think I'll have to do it soon, better than delaying the inevitable and having to pay for it and it probably won't be cheap.

Do you ever intend to upgrade to Windows 10? I know the audience here, you'll probably say no. After all a lot of you are still using Windows XP. I guess I just want someone to reassure me either that Windows 10 is not so bad, or that I'll be perfectly fine never upgrading.
Do I ever? Yes, but! that will be no sooner than when I see a (drm free) game I really, really want to play is being sold and already reported to require Win10 for real. Not sooner and especially not based on an announcement of a release of such a game alone; it already had to be released (fully, not Beta in all these fancy Newspeak variations) and been identified as game I really want.

Or when something else totally convincing I have absolutely no clue about right now comes up.

I have only used Windows from 3.1 onwards. I don't know what 1-3 where like, so those versions can be considered exceptions from this statement; but Windows 10 is easily the worst version of Windows Microsoft have yet produced. From the ineptitude of even really simple, fundamental things, like it's inability to correctly count the number of files in a folder right through to the intrinsic spyware, microtransactions and to top it all the unforgivable way it handles updates - restarting your computer without even so much as asking first. Its production seems both shoddy and arrogant in equal quantities.

Also if there are any benefits to the much lauded Direct X 12 I haven't seen them yet. I thought it was supposed to be a complete game-changer?

Right now? No. My Windows 7 install is rock solid and does everything I currently need. DX12 games are still a while out as well. Eventually? Most likely. I'll probably end up doing a full rebuild of my rig when DX12 becomes widespread and my hardware becomes too dated. Before that you'll have to pry Windows 7 from my cold, dead hands.

Windows 2.1
Windows 3.11

Windows 1&2 were closer to separate mini windows in ASCII-like graphics, at least from what i see. Windows 3 was when they actually went graphical.

Naturally due to the limited 186 technology and memory and graphics, you really can't blame them too much.

The system doesn't have microtransactions.

Another thing I kept hearing is that the system is DRM'd and whatnot. I'd like if someone checked with me what do they mean by that.

As i recall they do offer to remove ads from the built in card games if you pay $5 for a year... i'd call that a microtransaction...

That's an in-app microtransaction, the game has nothing to do with the system besides being built-in; the system itself has no microtransactions to lock you out of any features related to the operating system. To top it all off, you can uninstall it. All built-in games from Windows XP still work on 10.

Confirmed. Good ol' Minesweeper (winmine.exe) runs fine and only takes up 117 kb. No reason to deal with microtransaction for a game I already paid for when buying Win XP.

No, I'll stick with Windows 7 until 2020, than switch to Linux. Have seen a lot of positive things written about Linux Mint, earlier I was leaning towards Ubuntu. I haven't made the switch yet, so many of my games being Windows-only keeps me from doing so, but I'm hoping the number of Linux compatible games will grow in the next 4 years.

I'm going to look for a good lightweight version, i think Mint LXE (or something like that) was an option, but I'm still looking for one that gives me the features i want while being fairly small. The distro i WANT to love more is Slax, however the reliance on LZMA makes decompression a little too slow that it's almost not worth it.

I don't want to upgrade my current rig because I already upgraded it from Vista to 7 six years ago. An upgraded operating system on top of an upgrade is asking for too much trouble. However I may have to get Win10 if I buy a new pc, which could happen soon. But if I'm happy with Win7, isn't it possible to have the store image my current HD onto the new one? Would that even be worth it? Anyone?

I have been using Windows 7 64 for about a year and a half now, and I am really enjoying it; I even like it more than XP. But I have no plans to upgrade to Windows 10. It just doesn't make any sense for me to do so. In the future, however, after upgrading my current PC becomes futile, and it's time to get a complete hardware overhaul, mobo, cpu and so on, Windows 10 will more likely be in the cards for me to use (I might try Linux first).

It also must be said that I despise the force by which MS has shoved this new software down my throat. I never thought I would have to be weary of MS updates. I currently do not have any annoying W10 popups on my computer. I took care of that.

You're gonna be stuck with it eventually, might as well get it for free and take advantage of the DX12 features on your GPU. It's not perfect but, definitely the least problematic of the upgrades so far.

That or you can always go Linux...
