I agree with you.
I have meet people, who still thinks that piracy is only happened for PC games. Here was times, when people pirated Commodore 64 and Amiga games and some people have always wondered, did piracy kill commodore and amiga gaming. I think people was moving to another gaming platforms like SNES or Sega mega drive (aka Genesis). Those lovely times.

Absolutely GOG is not cause of piracy!!!
People, who download games illegally from the internet are cause of piracy.

Pirates will pirate no matter what, people even "pirate" free stuff thinking that they are not free. Some content might be in the public domain and available for download on their official site with no hassle at all, but they aren't aware of that, they just found a torrent link on some shady warez site and download it precisely because of that, because they are "pirating".

GOG's reasonable prices and DRMfree nature actually got me to stop pirating a lot of games. So my answer is no.

Every game release is a potential cause of piracy.
I don't feel like posting more about it because the OP is worse than most clickbait articles in general.

And Office and professional programs are the root cause of piracy too.

Nope because Piracy existed long before the Internet and GOG were a thing. People who pirate games are going to pirate them like it or not.

The premise of this thread is nonsense, and the real question should be -

How much has GOG reduced piracy?
I would say a lot, especially if you go by the many posts here in the forum, by people who say they stopped downloading from pirate sites since becoming a customer of GOG.

GOG have seen to a need, and continue to do so. They have provided a true legal avenue to many gamers, that wasn't there before they existed, though some will claim that abandonware downloading is legal.

Sure, some wankers provide GOG versions of games at pirate sites, but those sites tend to have cracked versions of those games as well. Maybe a GOG version is more trustworthy, but that is not guaranteed, as nothing keeps pirates etc from inserting malware.

A while ago a someone told me that almost all PC games on TPB came from GoG.
So I looked at the top 100 PC games on TPB by seed

No GoG game was in the top 30
Of the top 100, 7 were from GoG downloads, 4 of which had the steam version of the same game, and all 4 had more Seeds than the GoG version.

After I told him this, he replied.

"No, you need to search for GoG or it doesn't work"

I consider countries with extremely poor wages and crappy people with zero empathy for developers to be the causes of piracy. GOG installers are just an avenue those people take, and they would take a different avenue if they had to.

The only instance I am aware of where some might deliberately opt for a pirated GOG game, are where a game has been removed from sale at GOG.

The Duke3D games are an example of that, though to be honest, you have been able to easily get those games from abandomware and other sites for many years ... and on initial release, way back when, they had next to no copy protection anyway, from what I recall of my discs. So while some may have grabbed a nice clean GOG version, or one they perceived as such, it was more about the DOSBox setup than anything cracked.

I genuinely laughed at that.

Nope, pirates will find their ways and reason without GOG. I've never bought more games in my life than after I discovered GOG

To be fair, GOG fair pricing policy mitigated the poor wages part of your formula. Well, while it existed anyways ;)
