I would not consider it obscure. Of course it depends on what group of people we are talking about. For example on the gamedeals subreddit, GOG deals are frequently posted and discussed.

Would hardly say itch is obscure when its a gamedev favourite - nevermind that massive bundle they did last summer.

GOG is definitely an obscure store.

They even openly admit it themselves, albeit in PR-speak language, when they say stuff like they think of themselves as if they are akin to a small boutique store.

Someone posted the monetary value of Steam vs. GOG before, and GOG is like a very very very tiny drop in the vast ocean that is Steam. There is no reasonable comparison at all.

Wouldn't consider Itch obscure either. More like... midrange. Obscure is something that generally just people in the know, know about, and which also doesn't generally advertise so it's hard to get to know about it.

I guess you are right. When i go on Reddit (a mostly American site, so probably biased towards Valve) many people jsut simply assume that if you are playing a PC game, you must have got it from Steam... Even if it's availaible on GOG and Epic and the publisher's own site, or a combination of those...



However i don't know whether it's enough to consider it obscure. I mean Harry Potter has probably outsold Narnia a dozen times over, but that doesn't mean Narnia is obscure.

I am guessing there are many people who know about GOG but don't spend much money here since the games they play are FIFA, CSGO, DOTA, Battlefield, etc. and they can't get them here.

OP - It would depend on who you were talking to, but generally neither GOG or Itch.io are obscure ... unique yes, smaller than Steam yes. I guess you could say they are very niche, but they have had a lot of customers over the years.

It doesn't help to compare the numbers with those of Steam, quite irrelevant really when you get past a good size customer base as GOG has done, well and truly. Obscure would probably be something like the ZOOM Platform store.

Any gamer worth their salt would know about GOG and Itch.io ... they might not buy from them, but that's beside the point.

Yes I would say gog is obscure, not a lot of people know about them. For Steam even console only gamers know about it.

I think this discussion is pointless unless you eliminate Steam from the equation. Can't say "a major store like Steam". Unfortunately Steam is leagues above the rest, there's none that can be called major when compared to it. But eliminate it from the discussion and compare GOG, Epic, Origin, UPlay, Itch, Humble, Indiegala, various other key resellers, Fireflower, Zoom and various others listed for example in the DRM-free stores thread or, even more so, the small devs one, and you'll see what can be major and what obscure actually means.

GOG has been well know since TW3. The change in the forums was like night and day.

You should ask this on Steam forums or EA Forums. Anyone who frequents here enough to use the forum regularly will not see GOG as obscure, and that is biased data. That's like going to a specific restaurant and asking if people consider that restaurant to be good. Of course they do, that's why they're there.
