The original always online GOG game will no longer be supported by CD Red.

Maybe I just missed it, but I saw no news about it anywhere on GOG. No mention on the game's page either. Hey GOG, don't you think you should maybe let customers know the game is on it's last legs? I expect its shambling corpse will remain here for a good while, maybe indefinitely, but some heads up about the rigor mortis setting in would probably be appropriate.

The salient bits from the Destructoid article:

This does not, however, mean that Gwent will become a dead, non-playable entity. In a motion known to the studio as “Gwenfinity”, a skeleton crew will be assigned to routinely keep one eye on the game’s infrastructure, while the players themselves will be offered the opportunity to decide upon rule changes and balance tweaks as the Gwent meta continues, post-support.

With this new system, CDPR hopes that the Gwent community will be able to continue enjoying, and even evolving, the fantasy tabletop title. And so, while support will officially end in 2024, there will hopefully still be many, many years of coin-tossing over tavern tables still to come.

They cite a 50-minute 2023 roadmap developer stream without mentioning any particular timestamps of interest.

Thanks, I just skimmed through that video.

At the end, the CDPR guys say they are going to keep the servers up even after it's a dead game. But I'm sure they aren't going to do that forever. I wonder how long they will keep the servers up after it's a dead game? After they end support I estimate a year, two at most, before they pull the plug on the servers permanently.

And overall I think it's clear that GWENT has been a flop of a game which never achieved the mass levels of success that they were hoping for.

Not that I was ever a fan of Gwent (it was fine as a mini-game in the Witcher 3, but not a standalone game IMHO)... but now one has to wonder what CDPR plans to replace it with :|.

Maybe nothing, they're closing Monster Slayer (Pokemon GO-like game) too next year.
Thank heavens! They stole their money with banditry and are now shutting down bandit recruitment operations, but still keeping the current ones out there active.

I'm sure CDPR wants a slice of that big juicy multiplayer pie. I wager one of the projects either they or their partner studios are currently working on is multiplayer-centric. Call it a hunch.
Soooo... can we now play it without buying loot boxes? Like, hacking the good cards in? :P
The quoted source in the OP says

"From 2024 on, a small CDPR team will support the game at a maintenance level, while the Gwent community will be given tools to continue balancing and playing the game. The 72 cards coming in three expansions in 2023 will be the last new cards added to the game."

Underscore is mine
