NoNewTaleToTell: Or anything directed by DW Griffith,
"Birth of a Nation"?

Have you seen it? I have it on a hard drive, but haven't been able to bring myself to watch it. Yet.

"Classic or not, 'Birth of a Nation' has long been one of the embarrassments of film scholarship. It can't be ignored...and yet it was regarded as outrageously racist even at a time when racism was hardly a household word." - Andrew Sarris

"He achieved what no other known man has achieved. To watch his work is like being witness to the beginning of melody, or the first conscious use of the lever or the wheel; the emergence, coordination and first eloquence of language; the birth of an art: and to realize that this is all the work of one man." - James Agee

...that's one I haven't seen. Should I go ahead and put an asterisk by DW Griffith?

I've seen bits of it, but the whole thing is like four hours long and I don't have the stomach for that.

A lot of people say you have to give credit to Griffith because technically he was a brilliant film maker.
NO YOU DON'T!
Not in this case. Not then not now and not ever.

It's basically a docudrama about how the KKK saved the south from gangs of savage black men that ran around raping white women. I'd like to say I was being salacious in my description but in actuality my description doesn't do how fucking sick this movie is justice.

Yeah, I've never thought I could watch it straight through. But after reading a review like Ebert's (which is where I lazily grabbed those quotes), I almost feel I must...

"'The Birth of a Nation' is not a bad film because it argues for evil. Like Riefenstahl’s 'The Triumph of the Will,' it is a great film that argues for evil. To understand how it does so is to learn a great deal about film, and even something about evil."

Ain't nothing wrong with watermarking. Watermarking's good for DRM-free stuff. It can catch trivial sharing to its source.
Anyone else tried Noisetrade for independant music? (when did iTunes go drm free?. thought they were limited to < 320kps aac - or whatever the apple format was?)

Sorry, but that quote don't make much sense. The word 'racism' came into existence somewhere i the 1930's as a direct reaction to germany's nazy movement. The movie Birth of a Nation is from 1915. So back then they hardly used that word. But they may have talked about racialism. (which is a similar word, granted)

Itunes has gone drm-free already in 2009.

AAC it's an encoding not unlike MP3. Apple used a restricted version (until 2009) but the format is a standard that, is supported in many players outside of Apple.

I have a few albums I have discovered from there.

I don't love the fact that they tend to use 192 Kbps MP3 (at least that has been my luck).

I like Noisetrade for discovery but I still prefer to buy the music elsewhere if I really like it.
Pointless little bump.

-there are several live shows and also the quite lovely (methinks) fiction series Horace and Pete.

Also VHX has been getting things in better shape:
-http://www.kino-cult.com/ - buy and download drm-free through VHX (or watch online) - there are some old cult movies and some new indies... bought a couple of movies - but some nations might need hola app or similar to get all of the catalogue...

Also.. :)
http://watch.drafthousefilms.com/ - Drafthouse film has quite a catalogue. Bought Why Don't You Play In Hell? and loved it. drm-free. but the region problem of the kino cult applies here too...

And one more:
http://watch.synapse-films.com/# - I don't know what to say about it :)
