jjsimp: What is so locked down about Amazon's mp3 store? I was able to download mp3 files that I was able to put on several devices, and no bloated crappy client like that fruity company.
avatar
phaolo: Don't you still need Amazon program for multiple tracks downloads? Aren't there max download limits?
Also: many tracks aren't DRM-free, all files are modified with identifiers, I read about bad mp3 quality, no FLAC format (but I don't know if that quality is really needed).
Yeah, I think they are 256kpbs mp3s, and perhaps you need their client to download now. I remember just downloading via http, but it's been awhile. Most of my music is still purchased by the old reliable CD. Not sure with my hearing that I would be able to tell the difference between CD and 256kbps.
Not a store per se, but for music you might want to check jamendo.com .

Tpiom: I can highly recommend 7digital, drm free music - major labels, soundtracks... but they limit the quality to mp3 320 kbps at most, if you care about that.
I'm not an audiophile, so the quality is adequate for me. The prices, on the other hand, seem very steep compared to physical copies, so... does 7Digital have discounts or such on any reasonable scale?

I was going to choose 7digital, but then I read about max 3 download limit, so no!
I want to be able to obtain the files that I've purchased again, if I lose them for some reason.
If the people at 7digital fear some mass re-download trolls, they should just put a "cooldown" period.

Stuff: You didn't mention books[..]
Yep, I realized it in another post.

Thanks for the other suggestions guys

Sadly no, I don't think so. The prices are indeed steep and their website is an awful mess but still, at least I can get my music :D

3 download limit? I was unaware of that... Although, it doesn't concern me as much as I keep my own backup.

I didn't notice that. Another -1 for 7digital, then :\

Darn. I think I'll stick to physical copies for now, since they are cheaper to begin with and can be sold for a few euros each. Who knows, maybe some of them will become collectible in the future.

EDIT: Thanks anyway, though. Nice to know that at least some progress is being made in that field.

itunes = unfortunately your best option as has many of the popular labels.when did they swap over from apples crappy format to mp3 ? ( seem to recall that fact).not everyone likes the software used (basically infests your PC... or so its said).

doesn't band camp have a limited download policy?. bandit.fm has an OK selection but has a limited download policy (might have changed.... new layout is also dreadful IMHO).

not much in terms of ebooks....amazon kindle store seems to be biggest by far....

It seems so, sadly, but I'll never install that bloated locked unfriendly program on my pc! :\

I don't know, I couldn't find that information for now.. I hope not, though.

Yeah, but it's still super locked.
Also, about ebooks in general, I'd really like if they could be sold with both original language + translation in a single purchase.

Yeah, Kindle is locked, but at least they have a Kindle app that's free for any kind of device you could think of, including pc (not sure about mac/linux).
The cut-throat world of Android apps and games really needs a GOG equivalent.

Yeah, but it's not that hard to remove the DRM from the Kindle books. After all the books I lost when Microsoft Reader (.lit) shut down their activation servers and Microsoft exited the business, I convert all my purchased books to mobi and epub within a week of purchasing it.
VHX wants to be the next big thing in video.
