Is there anything like iTunes that offers a similar kind of range? Prefer not to use their bloated software
Who knows, maybe a BUMP will bring good news at some point.

Amazon's MP3 store, and probably Google Play. Amazon doesn't even require you to download their desktop app (though they still push you to do so, of course), which is a huge plus. Never really looked into Google Play, so I don't know what their catalogue's like, whether it requires a client like iTunes, etc.

Not really.

Stream if you want to pay through the nose, if it is available and you want to pay the price. E.g. streaming will often cost you several times more than purchasing the physical media...

My best advice is find someone who is selling a physical copy of what you want and then back it up to your desired format.
BOOP
BUMP, because meh
Nothing that ins't already said:
7Digital - MP3 and M4A prices are ok, but Flac is overpriced, especially if we have in mind that is a royalty-free codec.
Amazon - Now is easy to download full albums, but sometimes you found that a physical copy that included auto-rip is cheaper that the MP3. I suppose that is because those physical copies are imported.
iTunes - Requires to install a client for buy and download the music, I am not to install a client when other services allow me to use the browser.
Google Play - It requires to create a Google Payments account, so no of interest for me.

Darucas: You could also try qobuz.com - which is French and does not seem to have any complete official translation yet.
Just posting to note that it does now. :-)
Great!

It still has an edge over 7Digital for DRM-free/high quality formats in many cases (just bought some Deftones tracks for a good price in 'Hires' yesterday, single tracks are actually cheaper in this format than in the 'lower' CD quality, with all other lower formats offered for download).

I have a huge Blu-ray/DVD collection that I wish I could turn into DRM free files on a HDD somewhere, but I doubt it ever happens. Streaming has totally taken over that market. I'm going to be some grumpy grandpa buying a retro blu-ray player to watch 70's blaxploitation movies.

For music I use Amazon's MP3 store, which is pretty GOG-like. They have a client and streaming and whatnot but you can choose to just download the MP3s, which are DRM free.

Darucas: 7Digital
I've just had another look at the site:
- still no user ratings.
- no advanced search.
- few details in the pages (original release date, version, genre).
- single songs cost like 1\6 of the albums (even with 20+ tracks). Aka: what's the point.
- 60+ years old songs cost like modern ones.
- my localized site has less options (no deals, compilations, best of, etc)
- they can still remove already-bought products from your account (ToS)
- it seems they're closing the 7digital worldwide store and killing all its accounts. Bad precedent (link).

Yeah I've compared Qobuz to 7Digital as they're both DRM-free and have hires tracks, but the latter is definitely less interesting, I haven't been using it for years now, just checking now and then. I noticed yesterday that you can also add 'quite a few albums w/o single tracks available to buy' to the list...

Great... so they've done it again. :(

Posts at the end of pages often get ignored, so I simply duplicated it in a new one.
