Need some help. I am an older fellow and have upgraded to a reasonable decent laptop with the intention of playing games again. Pretty good so far and i found GOG through a mag and was really happy to get the original Far Cry which was one of the games i loved. Anyway...i only want to play FPS, single player, offline. I like Far Cry, FEAR, Crysis etc style of gamesand have really enjoyed DOOM 2016. I read a few lists of best FPS games and just downloaded STALKER Call of Pripyat. This is NOT the sort of game i like at all. Far to slow and involved for me. On further reading i think it is classed as a FPP and not a FPS. I hate it.
So i gather a FPP is totally different to a FPS?
Can anyone suggest some games that meet my criteria? FPS. Single player. Offline.
Thanks.

How about Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light?
Serious Sam games are pretty much the exact opposite of slow.
I've also heard good things about Strafe.
FPS: First Person Shooter (not really a fan of the genre except for maybe Duke Nukem 3d and Half-Life Series)
FPP: First Person Puzzle (also not a fan, but Magrunner and Portal are really good descriptions of the genre)

Stalker is sort of a survival, rpg first person game... Not really an FPS nor an FPP.

Finally, I also recommend the Metro series. Didn't play Last Light but 2033 is amazing. Also try the Serious Sam games and Painkiller series (this are like modern Duke Nukem and Doom games).

FPP stands for "first-person perspective". (I'm sure some people use it to mean "first-person puzzle", but that is not what GOG means when they use the term as a genre tag.)

Basically, all first-person shooters are FPP, but not every FPP game is an FPS.
The alternative being third-person perspective -- or TPP -- which, technically speaking, should include any game where you're looking at the character you're controlling from the outside, but which, in practice, is usually used to describe games with an over-the-shoulder "follow cam" (as opposed to "isometric", top-down, side-view, and probably others).

Hard Reset Redux and Shadow Warrior 2013 would probably fit the bill.

FPP - First Person Perspective
FPS - First Person Shooter
Doom clone - term that was used from '92 to '96 (release of Quake) that means the same as FPS, just doom was so groundbreaking that every other fps game was compared to it.

As somebody already pointed out in comments it's like Rectangles and squares. All of FPS are FPP but not all FPP are FPS. In matter of fact FPS term wasn't widely used before release of Quake, before that they were all called "Doom Clones" or FPP. Doom was actually the first game that brought recognition to the FPS genre as something distinct (even though there are games that fit FPS description and predate doom about 19 years, Id themselves released at least 3 FPS games before doom - Hovertank 3D, Catacomb 3-D and Wolfenstein 3D)

So if you want to be specific use FPS, if for example you want to talk about System Shock or Deus Ex use FPP as they're mix of FPS and RPG. And all games that came after doom and before quake can be called doom clones (heretic, hexen, duke nukem 3d, shadow warrior e.t.c.)

There's also a subgenre of FPP that contains vehicular combat (i.e. descent series) that some consider to be FPS and some do not so in this case it's safer to use FPP
i this has been informative, in the past i just glossed over the description, looked at screen shots and winged it. thanks!
You are basically looking for First Person action/run & gun titles.
Try Mobygames' game browser: https://www.mobygames.com/browse/games

Then click on a game and make sure it is just action and shooter as genere and gameplay

Do you remember the episode of 'The X-Files' entitled FPS? That was the early nineties and it seemed to popularize the term.
