I just wish people working with children would be good examples when it comes to honesty, solving conflicts in a considerate way, being respectful towards another, having the ability to see more than one perspective, not breaking laws, rewarding peaceful behaviour etc... than just people that are even less ethical than the children they are supposed to educate about being a good person.

I guess today it's mostly about becoming a "successful" person and there's no room for the things I mentioned in the public eye.

Okay, I was 9 years on a boarding school, have lots of experience with people working in social jobs both for children and adults and haven't met much persons like the one you are describing there so we probably have made different experiences.

Yeah, me too. But that may be in part down to having much less time for games and also the resultant backlog I already have. Whatever the case, I don't just grab any old game just because it's cheap any more.

People who studied philosophy at least know about ethics, logic and understanding very different perspectives (not only two dimensional adult/children, which is not helpful and very flawed). You have to attend those courses when studying philosophy no matter what. If they use it in real-life is dependent on the person of course.

When it comes to most social workers I got to know I always wondered what they actually did learn and I'm regularly in conflict with a group of child-care workers on my way to work which do things and argue in ways I'd never have imagined. They make crawling games in large groups on the narrow sidewalk although a playground is just down the road (therefore not only endangenring the children but also blocking the local traffic), insulting and trying to intimidate people that ask politely what is going on, smoking in front of the children, etc...
When I was working in a Kindergarten in the richer part of town, I've seen different kinds of fails but just as bad ones.

I studied a lot of philosophy in college and most of it was negative. We kept going over how the 'masters' turned out to be misguided, full of shit, or flat out wrong. :P

NOW, I want to to stress I don't mean that as a blanket statement and there is much in the way of peace and harmony that can also be gleamed from philosophical study, so would the Buddhist Monks in the forum pleas refrain from coming after me! :P

People who don't studied philosophy know this usually as well (one might call this knowledge "empathy"). However, having knowledge and using knowledge in a social way are two totally different things... And honestly I always felt that those philosophy guys a more far away from reality and "real" understanding than most other people. (you know the word "Elfenbeinturm", don't you?)

Maybe in Utopia and "empathy" - or rather the crippled knowledge of human nature most people seem to mean when saying it - isn't enough, especcially not when dealing with autistic children or other branches of the natural neurodiversity. Average people completely lack the needed "empathy" for even remotely understanding those.

There comes the usualy prejudice. The weird thing is, that I've never encountered this type, other not so great types yes, but not this one. Armchair activism and being removed from the real world is actually something all modern philosophers I've met impute to people in "social studies", "gender studies", etc...

You know, this may be had to believe, but I actually have a pretty good education. :P At the time I attended my high school it was ranked in the top five in the nation.

As far as I know the past 25 years haven't been so good to it. :P
