Well, if I had unlimited time I'd play Adventure games, but as it is I have to sacrifice some genres, including Adventure games, Real Time Strategy and Third Person Shooters.

Hmmm. I remember trying to play some text adventures and never getting into it. Played Joust as a kid quite a bit, and other games on the Atari800. Played a bit of DOOM, although at some point i decided FPS games weren't really for me. Didn't have many games since i didn't have much money, but i do recall renting consoles. Street Fighter 2, Megaman X, Mortal Kombat... Later a few games i did buy, Diablo 2 namely, Starcraft...

Bought a PS2 and got plenty of PS1 games on it, along with PS2 games. Then working for a while... Free games like ADOM taking up more of my time than i'd care to admit :P

Only in the last few years has my game collection grown to more than a handful.

I'd say i have too many games that finding one i want to play is hard. But RPG rogue-likes and puzzles seem to be my main genre of choice (still).

I think because i have less patience now than when i was young (not only with games). Life is stressful, i have more thoughts on my mind and i can no longer play long sessions as before.
Also now i leave more unfinished games than before.

Another old C64 user here. I played any kind of game I could find when I first discovered gaming.
Although I did eventually focus on fighting games and platformers, games like Double Dragon and Prince of Persia.

Then came a NES and Gameboy period with Castlevania, Mario, Mega Man and all that.
At the same time we bought a decent PC for the home, and I played stuff like Doom, Wing Commander and Gun Boat.

Then I got interested in motorsport and mainly played racing games, everything from arcade to sim.
I still love racing games the most, especially the sim kind.

10 or so years ago I returned to playing other genres as well, like Kotor, Halo, Half-life 2, GTA and other stuff.

I definitely preferred fast-paced games when I was younger, I did not have the patience for slow-paced games.
However today I'm happy to play either.

I think I play more genres now than I have ever done in the past. For one thing we have more genres now than when I grew up, and today its very common for games to include features from other genres.

The only genres I'm not willing to play anymore are fighting games and platformers.

ADOM... Ancient Domains of Mystery!, although it looks quite a bit different than it used to.. Keep in mind i played the ASCII version since there was no graphical version yet.

I would agree, but for a different reason: The "RPG" label is increasingly misused for games that I do not consider RPGs at all (such as Ys: The Oath in Felghana).

With that said, I sometimes do enjoy playing non-RPGs (like the one I just mentioned: It's a fun action game with some platforming, it just isn't an RPG).

With that said, I wish there would be more short, gameplay-focused, turn-based RPGs. (By short, I am thinking that a normal first playthrough should be over in 8 hours or less.)

Hm. I would say that Visual Novels are my favorite genre these days. A good JRPG like Persona 4 or Trails in the Sky also appeals. Not from gameplay mind you, but because they are like Visual Novels in how they emphasize the characters.

Gameplay wise, I have become very picky. Games that are designed around "oldschool" inconvenience automatically get a demerit, because the stuff I like from the oldschool era had nothing to do with masochism. To say the least, Underrail was a severe disappointment on these grounds.

Um, no, the genres I like are pretty much the same. If anything has changed, I think I'm a more analytical player than I used to be, in the sense that I'm smarter than I was when I was a dumb kid and I'm able to play with a clearer head. Being a smarter player makes me a better player even though it's possible that my reaction times have slowed a tiny bit. Same thing with "thinking" genres like adventure games or strategy - I'm just plain better at those than I used to be.

Interesting. Maybe I'll check that out.

Expect to die a lot. I don't think i ever got past 20th level :P

Hmmm lots of tips i could give.

I hate to say it but I think my gaming tastes are changing. I've picked up and dropped lots of titles I would have loved even a year ago but I find them tiresome now. (adventure, rpgs) The only games I have stuck with and completed recently have been shooters and dungeon crawlers. lol I hope its transitory and will phase back and forth as I age, or else I am going to have to add more than a few titles to my mainly adventure/rpg library.

Long story short: beat em ups, platformers and SHUMPS are mostly out. Racing and FPS are unchanged. RPG and Strategy have increased their share of my free time. So basically, things are less about reflexes and more about thinking.

Not really. I always liked fps games most. It was easy to jump right in and play. Most of them let me customize controls and those that don't I can usually adapt to. If anything, I play fewer game types than I used to.

I would like free-roam games more if they had customizable controls, let me fly like superman, play without the hud, and destroy all structures though.

Just Cause 3 looks close to that, but I'm not buying a whole new computer to find out.
