fronzelneekburm: The messages left by Otherside on their Kickstarter comments re: gog's "curation" are pure WTF tier...

"The DRM-free version provided at launch would most likely NOT be GoG due to the timing!"

"We originally had a contract with GoG in 2015, but after being in talks with them recently leading up to launch, their curation system has changed and they can no longer host us on launch day."

What the fuck is this shit??? Even by gog "standards" this is beyond absurd.

tremere110: WTF indeed. Rejected by timing? What, is GoG's curation run by an AI that was updated with the rest of the website? I mean that would explain a lot given their technical prowess (or lack thereof).

I don't understand what timing has to do with curation at all in this instance.
This is a company that rejected Opus Magnum

They already had 3 other Zachtronic games on GOG

A game that was universally praised

GOG then had the gall to 'launch' the game 2 months later as if "oh look we approved it we're so good"

It appears that someone didn't drive up a dumptruck full of money to GOG so it would fit on the 'schedule'

Your options are

1) Take whaver the non-GOG DRM free version is
2) wait 2-3 months for GOG to gloriously announce that the game is now on GOG because 'we listened' or some other bullshit

Thronebreaker DLC release day ?

* runs away *

What other games will be released on the same day on Steam / Gog ?

fortune_p_dawg: so i did not back this but am intrigued by it's legacy and pedigree, as i quite enjoy the ultima and ultima underworld games.

i have to say however, im quite surprised by what seems to be a lot of platforming and physics puzzle. more than i would have expected in a successor to the ultima underworld series, it also reminds me of trine graphically.
As far I recall, they did try to implement some amount of platforming and even some physics-based puzzles in Underworld games, but I assume the tech of the era didn't allow them to go nuts with it. To me, it seems like a pretty logical thing for them to have in a new game that is continuing the legacy as the modern engines are more than capable of handling those tasks.

This probably isn't an option for backers. I suspect we either have to take what is offered for DRM free, or we have to take Steam. I'd be surprised if they would retroactively give us all GOG codes should it eventually show up here.

Perhaps they don't want to give gog time to actually test and package the game before release? The statement sounds like the game will come to gog, just not on launch day. This does not necessarily mean months, but perhaps a week or two. I suppose that sucks for backers, but non-backers just have to exercise a little patience. In any case, like all other such issues, nobody who can/wants to talk actually knows the truth, and I guess it's easier to just blast gog.

This is what annoys me the most... I take the Steam code and then the game eventually lands on GOG when either they get the curators on a good day or it fits their schedule... ugh

I started taking itch.io seriously, yesterday. I was quite surprised to see how many games indie games on GOG were also there. It's a bit difficult to navigate and find what you want, but i figure with enough time... But hey, last time i said something like that, i got told off by gog staff.

II've come to the conclusion that, baring a few exceptions, i've gotten what i want from GOG. I've got over 500 games from gog alone, and even more elsewhere. I really don't need more. I don't need to go to itch and fight with it, but i also don't need to buy more from GOG. It'd be nice to get some of my games from elsewhere here, but if GOG doesn't want to get them, i will grab them when they get announced elsewhere DRM-free. It certainly wouldn't be the first time i've gotten games from elsewhere.

I tried to think about GOGs reasoning behind this... now I feel I've become more stupid in the process :(
Obviously the game isn't some pretentious indie metroidvania, roguelite with procedural levels and shitty pixel graphics, so it's not welcome on GOG.

It should be a roguelite with perma-death and procedurally-generated levels. Otherwise chances to come to GOG are quite slim.

Well it should be an option, I am so used to seeing my pledged games get their launch date estimations pushed back again and again that it is ridiculous to now see a delayed launch on GOG being claimed as a reason to seek another DRM-free host.

It's not that GOG release is delayed, its that as of right now, the GOG release isn't happening at all, and it might never happen. So, yeah, that's reasonable reason to look for another host.
Probably not. But I have a strange feeling that the Underworld devs didn't follow procedure.
