jeannekamikaze: I would also like a DRM-free Diablo 2. But at this point, what I would like more is to watch Activision/Blizzard and Bobby burn.
Well, to the former, there's no need to wait. Microsoft has already begun the process. To the latter, best let him slide into the background now that he's out.

Jinx_Skeel: well diablo 2 is there on the gog program dreamlist, with almost a 100.000 votes, so...
What GOG wants, what GOG customers want and what the owner of a game wants, are not the same. The first Diablo was released here 6 years ago. Despite strong demand for the sequel from GOG customers on the wishlist (even before the release of the first game), the only move Blizzard has taken is to remove Warcraft 1+2. I'm not completely ruling out a release, but I doubt it would be anytime soon.
For those unaware, the retail disc edition of Diablo 2 actually had its SecuROM 3 DRM removed in patch 1.14. Fully install the game (ie, copy the movies over from the disc as well), patch it, add dgVoodoo2, and it'll play 100% offline without any disc checks even on W10-11. It's also portable, ie, once you've got it setup, you can zip up the game game folder and reinstall it just by unzipping that file at a later date. Widescreen patches are available too. In fact it even runs in Ultrawide.

It would be nice it it were here, but as with Age of Empires, it's one of those games where you either grab the only available DRM-Free disc version when you can, or you'll end up waiting forever due to Remakeitus essentially being the "kiss of death" for getting original versions on GOG, post remaster.

I wonder does it actually plays well that way? Looks way to zoomed out, and I don't like what it does to the UI.

You simply drop down a resolution, ie, playing on a 1440p desktop screen = use 1080p, playing on a 1080p desktop screen = use 900p, playing on a 14-16" laptop = use 720p, etc. Everything is then less zoomed in. It also depends on screen size, eg, I have a 32" monitor and it plays fantastically at 1080p. When I had a 27", it felt too big at 1080p but looked and played well at 1600x900. (Similarly, that 2560x1080 Ultrawide screenshot actually looks really good on a 34" 3440x1440 UW monitor).

Interesting. I was wondering if there's a patch that would allow me to use greater resolution than the default one. I searched and found d2dx. I will bookmark your post to get back to it when I'm about to play Diablo 2 once again. Thank you for useful information.

I've been using D2MultiRes for years and with dgVoodoo2, it still works fine even today.

Example 1440x900 screenshot.

Example 1680x1050 screenshot.

I have to admit it looks better than the legacy mode in D2 Resurrected.
So what is good about Diablo 2?
I could never get into it even though i have it on cd and the expansion cd which i found in a store long ago. Played it a little and i always though allies in the game made me stop playing kinda when i got them, played until i found the smithy of the first game and stopped
Kinda liked diablo 1 with it's atmosphere, but Diablo 2 i don't know why i don't like it.

I also like Diablo 1 better, but the sequel has a longer and more engaging multiplayer experience. I like to sit down and play with my real life friends while also doing some roleplaying (no matter the game, it's always fun for us) and after completing the whole diablo 1 experience we felt it was about time to jump right into the sequel, for some extended home-made roleplaying fun...

I never really got into it either. Iike you said, I love the first game for its atmosphere, it's one of those laser-focused games that deliver an incredibly tight, immersive experience followed by a sequel that just feels too big and all over the place. Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City were a lot like that too (though at least I finished City, unlike Diablo 2).

That doesn't mean I think Diablo 2 is a bad game, but it jsut feels more like... a game. I know that sounds stupid, but when playing Diablo 1 I really feel like I'm on this lonely quest descending deeper and deeper into a dark labyrinth. When playing Diablo 2, especially after Act 1, I just feel like I'm clicking monsters to death.
Not until Microsoft decides to stop absolutely hating PC gaming.

Good question. Consider it one of the worst games I ever played. (Sacrilege, I know.) Yeah, not exactly worst in absolute terms, not broken or unplayable or of less quality than a whole lot of the junk out there, but compared to the hype and the expectations from the dev... Made it to the end out of sheer stubbornness, but just dreaded pretty much every single moment of playing it.

A lot of is simply the gameplay loop. No-one buys Diablo 2 for a deep & meaningful story, but rather it's incredibly good ARPG fun to run rampage as a Necromancer and a dozen skeletal mage summons, and gameplay is 'smooth' without being too grindy. Same with Torchlights - they aren't particularly deep RPG's, but what they do, they do well. :-)
I'll do ya one better: Diablo 3? When?
