Sarisio: But isn't it exactly why Diablo 2>>>Diablo 3, because you can play offline? Or do you prefer to play on closed battle.net mostly (I am not sure if closed/open thing still exists)?
avatar
KiNgBrAdLeY7: Not even close... Diablo 2 >>>>> Diablo 3, because:

1) 3 wasn't made from Blizzard North.
2) 3 had a terrible artistic graphics approach, cartoonish looking w@nk.
3) 3 lacks HUGE content, item types, affixes and prefixes variety, complexity and gameplay elements, that 2 was swarmed with.
4) 3 has always online DRM, 2 is DRM free, even when you play online.
5) In 3 you cannot play lan or local bnet.
6) 3 had that horrible, outrageous, chinese farming, shameless, real money Auction House; removing it later doesn't abolish the horrible act...
7) Drop rates in 3 are ridiculously low, even after expansion and patches.
8) 3's endgame items both look and are ridiculous when compared to 2's.
9) 3 is consolized, oversimplified and lacks character control and modification, like stats for free distribution at level up.
10) In 3, not every character can wear any armor, if strength is enough. I like my mages with plate, thank you very much. D&D rules, looks, approach and wannabyism is fine, as long as it stays within D&D.

Other than that, i already explained i decided to beat through Battlenet, expansion character, ladder AND hardcore. For the insane challenge first and foremost and then for the exclusive runewords, items and content. And 3, like say, Diablo 3? This *thing* does not exist for me, or in my dictionary. Is it even edible!?
I rarely agree with anything you say but this time is true but still i decided to be brave and played diablo 3 just for the story sake i have to got to say three things though.

A) Game story sucks this is just like the deus ex invisible war , i doubt anyone can go along with such a messy plot , It certainly killed off my interest to go for the expansion
B) I know the game is online only and i was sure i was going to have to go through hell playing it with my low speed connection and poor old laptop but strangely i did not have any issues the game is well optimized and the network was stable enough that i finished the game in two sittings.
C) Graphics are meh and the rpg elements are 90% automated they went from the cool builds you could have in diablo 2 to lazy one click mode just like those qte events. sigh diablo 2 graphics can out match diablo 3 anyday

The game is playable very much since it still follows the diablo hack/ slash way but the boring loot drops, poor story and cartoonish graphics i don't think anyone would want to replay it again.

liquidsnakehpks: ... i don't think anyone would want to replay it again.
Except diehards, fanatics, fanboys, teenagers with lots of time to kill, and if there's still trading, bots & profit...

I'm reminded when i saw previews of Diablo 3 coming out, how they were going on about the different classes and features, and i couldn't help but be utterly bored. Plus the combat felt slow and sluggish, specifically you couldn't move on til you beat all the waves the section decided to throw at you, usually several. Then the Boss fights looked like a total chore.

Ultimately, always-online and no modding made me lost all interest in the game.

hohiro: CE max is definitely a good decision[..]
Considering golems, clay is by far best[..]
avatar
phaolo: Didn't points in CE just increase the radius? Max seems a bit excessive..
I liked clay golem too. :)

EDIT: yes
Why is max a bit excessive, this skill kills every normal monster with 1-2CE so the more radius, the more monsters you will kill per CE, damage is more than enough. In multiplayer it is still very strong, but needs a bit more CEs and even there range is verygood as you even kill ranged monsters out of sight ;)

I don't recall the number, but I think that a lower radius was still fine.
Monsters tended to group around your summons, so the first corpse was always nearby.
At worst you had to move just a bit.
The biggest problem was when your CE was denied by missing corpses..

Lower radius still is fine, but ranged attackers wont move towards skels and you can kill them way easier with greater range. Why not bump THE killer skill and go for something worse. A skelemancer can do extremely well with other build, too, but this one is just more comfortable and faster. CE the guys around your skels, AD before you and CE a corpse on the edge and the screen before you is empty ;)
BLASTED lag! I tried morning today some farming, game got stuck in mausoleum, superunique with lightning damage came out of a room, aura enhanced with that cross pattern lightning aura that causes damage over time WITHOUT need to touch/hit you, 2 seconds after it unfroze and started running backwards, i was dead. 800 hitpoints gone over at a total of 5 seconds of lag and stuck motion!!! And i wasn't even HIT in close combat! With 55 lightning resist, too!

RIP 75 level character, this time.

Bah, i won't stress over Battlenet again. Besides, loots were somewhat terrible anyway, especially when compared against previous versions. No one joined my games (i created numerous "PARK" ones) so i could have better xp and item-dropping chance... I reached hell without HALF the gear i could/should have, unlike the old days that nightmare was THE super store, so it was only a matter of time to die again. And hell is terrible, anyway... Chipped gems, cracked/damaged whites all around, runes like eld and nef instead of those that hell should spawn (ko, gul, etc)... Blast it.

Now i might try singleplayer with the Players 8 command. If only i could use this command in battlenet while i was farming for items and xp, i wouldn't have to suffer that, but it cannot be used in battlenet, damn.

RIP KiNgBrAdLeY7's hero.
That's why I don't like harcore and I mostly play offline :\

Start with Players 1 or 3 lol.

This is why I don't play hardcore.

Nah, it adds an "epic" feeling (dead character gets a "wanderer" appearance) and a hardcore one (you are hardcore, lol)! Also, my fault for not Alt+F4-ing, when i lagged... If drops were a little better, or comparable to the old 1.09 times, though, MANY more people would play hardcore, willingly. My lack of gear decent enough for hell, combined with lag at the most dangerous times, conspired to bring me down, this time. To be honest, i feel satisfied. Too many runes though and a good bunch of runewords, lost...

UPDATE!!!

Now that the sorrow of loosing two hardcore chars in a row has passed, i am going to make a normal, ladder, battlenet. No more flashy titles like conqueror (i failed to get guardian as i died in hell), but at least, i can survive to become a patriarch, the only thing i have never achieved in this game. At least i kept my 75 level dead, ghost, wanderer sprite hero! Now time to conquer the normal realm.

Is there any reliable way to make D2 look good on a widescreen?

I tried a patch four or five years ago but it looked terrible.

At this point I don't even care if it's standard form with black cutoffs on each side, just so long as it's not stretched.
Sorry E, i have no idea. The patchnotes mentioned something about widescreen support, but i payed no heed, despite i myself have one. I play in 800x600 and it seems as good as day 1.

Thanks anyway. I'll keep checking in case someone else has something. Until then I have a bunch of other Diablo 2 clones I've been dying to have a go at.

Video card settings (Catalyst and whatever NVidia uses) should have option - "maintain aspect ratio". It should work for most games and it should give you what you want (with black borders).
