Not sure what it's all about?

Have you heard the word?
The word is that we get the chance to work with Larian Studios to design an NPC character in their about-to-win-kickstarter sequel, <span class="bold">Divinity: Original Sin 2</span> - a unique in-game character, the #GOGHero, complete with a backstory and private motivations to intertwine with the players' fates.

Well. YOU get to design them.

Because the more is always the merrier, we're handing the #GOGHero over to you, the gamers, and everyone is welcome to pitch in with their ideas! The entire gaming community is invited to a massive brainstorming session with Larian Studios & GOG.com, and to submit their own ideas for the upcoming character.

For a touch of authenticity, Larian is providing official guidelines to work with - just like the ones they use during development. Fun, but optional:

--Each character has 3 major traits: Vanity, aggression, pride, self-confidence, racist towards dwarves/elves/humans/orcs/sourcerers...
--1 Quirk or Eccentricity: A predilection for dogs in leather boots, refuses to face north for religious reasons, in denial about his singing.
--One Fear/Loss/Block/Wound: Something traumatic in their background for which they are compensating in some way, or which drives them to do something normal people don't. His wife was killed in a tragic accident and now he's a kamikaze detective with a death wish. His parents were murdered by a criminal so now he's a vigilante crime-fighter. He's terrified of intimacy so treats women terribly. That kind of thing.
--Race: Human, dwarf, elf, lizard, undead.
--Background: Gender, age, job function, loyalties.

Throughout the brainstorm, the team from Larian, including creative director Swen Vincke among others, will be joining in us to browse, weigh in, and search for inspiration! Finally, when the time comes, they'll design three final characters combining the awesomest ideas, complete with official concept art and backstory. Once again, the #GOGHero will be placed in your hands with an official vote to chose the favorite champion from the three proposals. The winning character will go on to become the community-made, full-featured NPC in Divinity 2: Original Sin.

Here are a couple thoughts:

1. A female dwarf. Perhaps someone who likes to style her beard (assuming female dwarves have beards in the setting); that could be her quirk.

2. How about taking some other set of ideas and making the character transgender; however, that fact only becomes apparent if you delve deep enough into the dialogue tree. (In other words, it isn't the defining trait of the character.)

3. Combine 1 and 2: A dwarf who was physically male (but maybe has changed that somehow), but who identifies as female.
Race: Ethereal

Traits: Bold, charismatic, prefer to stay in the dark.

Quirk: As his body is partially non-corporeal locks on chests, ownership and property rights of other people are meaningless to him. He just likes to take everything he likes.

Fear: An air elemental once took his clothing and armor while he was caught up in a storm. So now he's afraid anyone else might steal his stuff. So he hoards everything in his stash.

Class: thief / monk

Background: He's chaotic neutral. He used to be a pirate, but after being thrown into jail he now just wants to be free. Although he still uses his old tricks to acquire some gems he always desired. He's been in training with some (l)awful monks ever since, who keep seeing their gems disappear. He lives in a monastery that is said to have a hidden gem in the dungeon. His age is unknown.

Pyrofox: Why does this thread exist? CIRI CIRI CIRI!
That would be great. =P
Could they script the character to retrieve its conversation from a central server?
That way it could constantly spout topical political stuff.
Time to create my Mary Sue!

GOG Bear

- Agressive and racist towards (server) gremlins
- Believes that he carries the world upon his shoulders
- He's terrified of insomnia (which overcomes him about twice each year)

Stevedog13: This is so awesome! There really will be an Original Sin 2!

As to the character, how about a claustrophobic dwarf who can't go back underground due to his fear. Instead he wears boots with really big heels and tries to pass himself off as a human wizard. Being a dwarf means that his people don't have the natural affinity for magic so he is actually a very terrible wizard, his potions don't actually do anything (well one time a guy went blind and woke up with a terrible hangover but he doesn't count that). Still the dwarf tries and tries, always failing and never seeing his true talents. Out of despiration he creates a number of gadgets that he can hide in his robe which give the illusion of magic, such as a small electric capasitor that can be charged up and releases a bolt of electricity much like a spell would. He could be the greatest inventor of all time, but that's more of a dwarf thing and he is a human wizard; just look at his height and hat (but not his boots) and you can clearly see he is no dwarf!
I like that! ;o)
We found him serving behind the counter. 'George O. Gee's Unadulterated Foodstuffs,' said the sign, 'where chalk and cheese really are different!' We bought a loaf of unleaded bread while he told us about his passion for recipes without nasty surprises.

His other passion was for the road, he said, going on tour in search of new dishes to unadulterate. And half an hour later we were off, George in tow, incanting enigmatic hints about the villages ahead and the dubious things he'd taste-tested in them.
(But really my vote is for GOGBear.)
I expect anti DRM and anti-steam descriptions coming up. Not to mention proud, rash and apologetic.

I'm attempting to turn GOG itself into the hero. Here we go...

Name: Bruen d'If

Major Traits: Driven to cherish freedom above all else. Moody and susceptible to changing stance depending on situations, though doesn't lose sight of primary obsession. Evasive and secretive, but with the best intentions.

One Fear/Loss/Block/Wound: Was once squired to a noble and benevolent warrior, Sir Malvers Trawn. But as this warrior grew in power and prestige, his cruelty and need for control expanded. Bruen became the one to suffer most under this tyranny, pushed to do things they would have never done before, until at last a particularly savage command drove Bruen to grievously maim Malvers and escape. Now Bruen will never be enslaved again.

Quirk or Eccentricity: Refers to self in third person, which is a coping mechanism for distancing themself from the wrongs they have done in the past.

Race: Human male or female werebear/skinwalker. Under duress or in violent combat Bruen can transform into an ursine humanoid, massive and brutal. Bruen cannot use weapons or magic in this state, but the natural weaponry this form affords makes up for it. Bruen was made a werebear by the witchwoman of a tribe whose lands Malvers Trawn coveted. She worked this magic to give Bruen the strength to truly resist, and to put an end to the cruelty of Malvers.

Background: A foundling raised by the enclave holy order at the Chateau d'If, Bruen was taught that obedience and placidity were the greatest virtues. Being a quiet but observant child, Bruen so discovered the hypocrisy behind the order's facade, and when the order sold Bruen to Malvers it seemed like the chance to get out and do some good. That this hope was eventually betrayed by Malvers as well has caused Bruen to become solitary and withdrawn from society. Bruen wanders penitently, trying to do good and liberate whomever they can along their path. And Bruen suspects that somewhere out there Malvers still searches, looking for vengeance.

Great idea! =)
No Bear race, I am disappointed as this means no real GOGBear.
Major Traits:
pride, self confidence, hate towards everything Source

Quirk/Eccentricity:
prone to get lost in memory when reminded of his past and likely to fall into anger or grief when shaken out of that state

Loss/Wound:
Lost his lover to war, commited suicide in grief and to be reunited with his love in death, but was Reanimated by the Source.

Race:
Undead

Background:
male
Aims to end the Source once and for all so he can find rest and no one has to ever again endure what he was put through.
Used to be a poet before being drafted into the war that cost him his lover.
He rarely trusts people and is loyal only to himself and his goal.

thats my rough idea for the character concept...it very likely needs quite a bit fleshing out and since i dont know what the larian crew will be going for story/lorewise it might be unfitting in parts
but i like the idea...so yeah...there he is ;)
i dont really have an idea for his age btw...but i would assume he should have been undead for quite some time now...and before that he probably was in his thirties
Undead. Racist towards humans.

1) Refuses to abandon grudges and rest in peace. Won't rest until everything he was forced to suffer is fully avenged.

2) Former nobleman. The people he regarded and hailed as dearest kin and friends, were in actuality his enemies; stole off everything and everyone he held dear or precious away from him. Staging a conspiracy, they convinced the entire realm that he was an enemy to all, sentenced him to death, but discovered he was immortal. In fact, he became invulnerable due to the effect of self-cursing and an ancient invocation of a mighty spell. Truth is he exchanged his heart, which had been pure and soul, which had been kind and honest, to acquire immortality. He was ostracized. Biggest scar was the betrayal from his fiancee he loved more than even his own life, keeping an amulet with her picture engraved in it, like a charm, as a source of power. Turned her (tiny objects in a small container) personal belongings she left with him before departing, into (something akin) a phylacterie (from D&D) (or) a soulstone (from Diablo) (lore).

3) Male, 30, as of now ageless, necromancer/warlock, former paladin while being a nobleman. Loyalties: Former/Broken off/Betrayed by: The church of light, the good religion (mainstream good religion of setting's lore), he even had been a member of, before. Recent ones: The runemasters' brotherhood, The order of the Dragon, The chaos magicians, The fiends.

I had on tabletop D&D once a very similar character background, before.
