I chanced across this project yesterday:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1900068131/demoniaca

"KOF meets Castlevania in a bloody pixel art story." Retro sidescroller horror story with some beat 'em up in the mix. SNES-ish graphics. DRM-free. PC, Mac, and Linux. Standard and uncensored versions planned, with explicit violence and nudity in the uncensored version.

I'm loving the rated-R horror vibe, especially the bit where she sews herself back together after having been disemboweled.

Demoniaca: Everlasting Night - Pre-Alpha Gameplay Trailer

They don't seem to likely to make their goal, but they're not asking for the moon, so you never know. Some promotion by interested gamers might do the trick. They've raised about $5000 in pledges toward their $16,700 goal and have 10 days left.

Vote for Demoniaca on the Community Wishlist:

Yeah, I'm not a fan of pixel art in general either. SNES-level or above can work for me, tho, and I like the style of what they've presented.

The horror elements are the main draw for me.

Awww yeeeah, pixel sex! :P

I'd skimmed past the stretch goals (since they aren't likely to meet them) and hadn't noticed that until you mentioned it. Good horror (especially supernatural horror, but often psychological horror/thrillers) usually involves both erotic and violent elements. I rent and buy a lot of direct-to-video horror films, and it's often easy to separate the chaff from the possibly-good by looking for an R-rating and content warnings. I don't give PG-13 horror a chance without strong recommendations (and even then I do so only reluctantly).

I don't normally like horror films.
I recently watched It follows due to people praising it.
It was terrible. >_<
I guess I just don't like getting scare chords for no reason.

I thought it was decent. Maybe not great, but good. A fun concept.

I'm not usually frightened by horror. Probably desensitized from the copious amounts I've watched. ;)
Looks interesting with the '90s NEO GEO graphic style MetroVania vibe. There is mention of a DRM free digital copy, but I can find no mention on either on the Kickstarter or developer page how this DRM free copy is planned to be distributed. It doesn't look like they are going to make their pledge amount in the time frame that is remaining.
I had posted about this game in the Kickstarter thread last week. I like the NEO-GEO style graphics and I am always down with a good Metroid-vania game. I think the focus on nudity and sex is a little much, but I'd be willing to look past it as long as the game itself is solid. Unfortunately, the dev has really been focusing on the adult content in his project updates, so it makes me a little worried. Regardless, I am supporting the project in the hopes it will end up being greater than the sum of its parts. The project isn't pacing well, unfortunately, but we'll see how things progress.
That sure is some generic, sloppy pixel art, I'm getting a real amateur, MUGEN redrawn KOF sprite vibe.

I'm pretty sure some of those sprite animations are a little more than inspired by KOF animations.

As in, blatantly ripped off straight from KOF characters.

I hope I'm wrong, though.

I don't think it's fair to say they've been focusing on it.

Update 1: 30 days left! -> general project status
Update 2: MNEMOSYNEGAMES.COM IS UP! -> announcing the website
Update 3: Gameplay Trailer is live! -> announcing gameplay trailer
Update 4: Combat mechanics! -> about combat mechanics, one adult-oriented pic
Update 5: Player Enhancements! -> about animation frames, one adult-oriented pic

And as I mentioned before, both erotic and violent elements are integral parts of horror.

Cool! And yeah, it doesn't seem to be on track to fund, unfortunately. Honestly, it seems like it might be somewhat of a risky bet (small unknown dev, tiny budget, etc). But the project page is fairly well put-together, they're not asking much for the game, and it looks quite interesting, so I'm willing to gamble a few bucks on it.

Well, it looks all right to me. Better than some of the pixel-junk I've seen here on GOG at least. But I'm not a connoisseur of modern pixel art (and actually somewhat dislike it in general; tho I do love FTL).

You might be right. I'm only somewhat familiar with KOF, mostly the later games. They do openly claim KOF as an inspiration. There's a question about the similarity in the FAQ, and they say the animations should become more unique as development continues.
