so i asked Kubold for an explanation on steam, and this is what they replied:

"Sure, I asked to delist from the storefront because almost nobody bought it there (ever, not just now), single digits per month, since the release. Everyone is here. It was an accounting liability. I will continue updating it for people who bought it there though.

And btw. the Steam version is also DRM-free."

can't link the thread for some reason, but it's in the comments of yesterday's steam update (Feb 14, update 2024.02.14.0)
Just added funds to my account now and it's gone, smh.

Which still makes no sense. If the dev is going to keep updating the game, the work is still there!

Only two things they are really doing:

- No DLCs for you;
- We'll update it... eventually.

This - once again - just confirms that the majority of the GOG audience isn't up for buying into InDevelopment/Early Access titles and will only pick up the finished, feature-complete "Gold"/1.0 version instead.

Like myself, many probably had just been patiently waiting for Hellish Quart to release proper, and then would have purchased it. But I guess this is just too much of an outdated concept these days, to even consider.
Maybe it's another dev who dislikes having to submit invoices.

I wonder how its sales compare specifically to other Early Access games.

Edit: incidentally, https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/hellish_quart should have its 'completed' mark removed.

Of the couple thousand games I've picked up over the years on GOG I've never even once wishlisted, liked or whatever else you can do engagement-wise nowadays, let alone bought any of them while they were still in active development. I'm just old-school like that, and so is a significant portion of GOG's userbase, it looks like.

And just like me, others will gladly pick up v1.0 of Hellish Quart, should Kubold decide to add it to GOG's catalogue again, in the hopefully not so distant future.

Shame, but that's what I figured.

You or someone else should make a new wish for it, please; that one will probably remain "completed" since the game did show up. A new wish would show how many people want it back.

Maybe the dev has better luck when the game eventually releases out of early access.

Well, at least he's honest about it.

As to the game itself: I would not have bought it,as long as it was still in development.
And probably also not after release of the "done" version.
Simply because the genre (fighting game) isn't really my thing.

Though I will admit: it looks nice, and physics based combat is something relatively unused in games (is "Exanima"/"Sui Generis" still a thing?)
I wish the dev the best of success.

Edit: missing word

That a dev who had to be contacted via Steam received nearly all sales of an Early Access game via Steam does also look as though it might be a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

https://web.archive.org/web/20240124000627/https://hellishquart.com/ shows that Steam and GOG were given equal billing for purchasing links but the Forum link goes to Steam. Not surprising, given the larger user base, but I imagine buyers of Early Access games might be particularly likely to want to participate in discussions on the officially blessed forum.

I don't have a problem with wishlisting, I see it as tool to keep track of games that interest me.

However, given the history of devs abandoning games on GOG, I don't buy early access games. Even fairly new "fully released" game are risky nowadays since since some GOG releases are missing patches and DLC enjoyed by larger storefronts.

I avoid buying In Development games, be it here or elsewhere. To be honest, some games that are released as full games are in reality In Development games, and I hate the constant updating.

I guess I'm too old for this stuff.

Thanks for the info.
But do they have to pay some fee to keep the game on this store? Because otherwise, it makes no excuse for removing the game from here. Any open storefront helps, even one with little profit.
