Mushihime is going to be out in Steam in the next couple of weeks, and it looks like it's going to be the definitive version of the game, based on the current beta build that's out there.

Blackbird from Degica said that they'd like to bring Mushihime to GOG, but that it's up to GOG as to whether they want to carry it.

Sooo, it looks like the ball is in GOG's court now. Here's the wishlist link:

I mean, seriously. Instead of the umpteenth generic war game (Achtung Panzer: Karkhov 1943, I'm looking at you), let's get something a little different for a change.

Well, I sent them an email weeks ago regarding the game being on GOG, and depending on their answer it might come here:

Bradner Parkinson from Degica:
I will try to get Mushihimesama on GOG. GOG is more selective about what games are allowed on their store, but if we can, we will.
Either way, depending on how it goes it's most likely a day one purchase for me (same goes for the soundtrack and 1.5 version).

Come on, GOG. You can do it!

We've contacted GOG a few times about getting our titles on their platform
Below is an email from GOG from a week or two ago in regards to Mushihimesama. We'll be sending them some info on Monday and hopefully they'll choose to take the title. If they don't, we'll work on releasing a DRM free version via the Humble Store.

"Hi Name,

We’ve discussed Mushihime Sama internally and because we’re so close to launch we’re not sure if we’ll be able to make it for launch, especially because this will be launching around the same time as our Fall promo. We’re also not totally convinced that the game can perform so well for as as it appears to be relatively unknown outside of Japan.

Because of this what we’d like to do is to wait and see how the launch on Steam goes and then see if it makes sense for us to add the game at a later stage.

Best of luck with the Steam launch!

All the best,
Name"
Blackbird from Degica made a wishlist entry (even though a GOG user here made one before):

One of the few times I ended up using the wishlist feature. Great game overall, and will buy it again if it comes here.

Hmm, I am surprised GOG finds that as a viable business model... As a customer I'm fine with that approach, but I always figured GOG loses sales if they routinely first wait if the game sells on Steam. Ok maybe it was just for this game as it is "unknown"(?) outside Japan.

Ps. I like DoDonPachi arcade version a lot, so I presume that means I'm interested in these "unknown" bullet-hell games.

This is kind of ridiculous, this game and other CAVE games are a classics, even if they are classic in a "niche" genre.

Not to mention that we have several obscure doujin/indy SHMUP already on GoG so refusing CAVE's games because they are not "known enough" outside of Japan sounds silly to me.

Hopefully once the fall sale is finished they will release it here.

Between this, XIIZeal and the Alltynex series it's incredibly frustrating to see GOG trot out the "they're not popular enough" excuse. These are games with good ports and digital extras ready to go. I understand the need for curation, you don't want any old buggy student project garbage coming in, but these are professional products (or in the case of Alltynex, at least a well-respected indie) with proven reputations and quality that's evident on its surface.

When GOG started, they did so by serving an under-served group that big publishers had given up on: classic PC gamers. And they did so without DRM, which was considered crazy at the time. The gamble paid off big time. Seeing them turning things down now (from companies who want to distribute their games DRM-free) for not being popular enough is sad, and completely against what made GOG great in the first place.
Do your job GOG and while you're at it,bring Touhou too.

Touhou's actually quite unlikely because ZUN takes an almost perverse pleasure in keeping his games small and "genuinely indie." The deal with Playism is an olive branch to overseas fans, but it's an exception, not the rule. Not much GOG can do there unfortunately.
I wrote to GOG about this. Here's the reply I got:

Hello,
I'm sorry to see that you are disappointed by our decision, but we must be very selective with what games we accept for release.
GOG has a boutique approach to games and our goal is to give justice to each game we release. Due to this, we have to limit the amount of releases, and to do this, we unfortunately have to reject many of the submissions, so that those that are approved get proper exposure on the storefront. Our BizDev and QA teams thoroughly research and evaluate every incoming title, but I'm afraid that I am unable to disclose the details as to how exactly they make their final decision.
I appreciate your understanding.

That's standard copy-paste. I can't really blame Support though, assuming they're still swamped.

I figured, but I also figured it wouldn't hurt to post it here anyway.
I just want to share my frustration with the rest of you. I have found some of GOG's previous refusals weird but this is almost unbelievable.

Thanks for the links to the responses from the publisher!

Agreed. God forbid a shmup gets released and takes the attention away from Yet Another Goddamn Roguelike.

Sometimes it feels like GOG is 75% RPGs and strategy, 25% everything else they were forced to put up for variety.

It's been a while since the last time we whined & complained about GOG's shmup situation, so maybe this'll liven things up a bit.
