UPDATE: Heads up! There are 24h left, so now is the time to take advantage of the amazing deals and upgrade your collections. Eyes on the price, Boo, eyes on the price!

Years ago, the Baldur's Gate series changed the way we look at gaming and the scope of what was considered possible. Even now, the legacy continues through the Enhanced Editions – thanks to the hard work and years of updates to keep the inimitable Infinity Engine living on.

It's the work on the Enhanced Editions that made Siege of Dragonspear possible – the just-released, massive expansion to the timeless classic, available only for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition.

"The team at Beamdog was able to breathe a new life into the Infinity Engine classics." says Greg Tito, Communications Director for Dungeons & Dragons "We're proud to recognize their excellent work in offering the best possible experience and support for these legendary titles. We want these to become the definitive editions – featuring both the enhanced and classic versions of the games."

On April 29, Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition will be expanded to include the classic versions – each becoming the Definitive Edition Bundle and not available for purchase separately. If you already own the classics on GOG.com, the games currently on your shelf won't be affected.

"We're excited to take our commitment and support to Baldur's Gate and GOG fans to the next level and humbled to work with such great partners. The Definitive Edition Bundle will give every Baldur's Gate fan what they're looking for" – concludes Cameron Tofer, Beamdog COO.

In the near future, we're also looking forward to full GOG Galaxy support for achievements in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition – as well as in the Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear expansion.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition will be 75% off until April 4 11:59 PM PDT / April 5 2:59 AM EDT/ 7:59 BST and 60% off until April 29 10:59 AM PDT / 1:59 PM EDT / 18:59 BST. The 60% discount for Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition until April 29 10:59 AM PDT / 1:59 PM EDT / 18:59 BST. The 85% discount for owners of the original saga will last until April 29 10:59 AM PDT / 1:59 PM EDT / 18:59 BST.

chromeneon: I wouldn't feel "fooled", given that in this case 40% (40? more like 10 % in this case) equals 5 bucks...
Price was $14.97 during Insomnia sale and is $8.97 now (for owners of the original games). That's a drop by 40.08 %.

Yeah, that's true. The way I see it is a 75% discount vs 85% discount. However you choose to look at it though, at the end of the day it's still 5 bucks. Hardly a reason for anyone to feel fooled if you ask me..

Another way to see it (which looks even worse):
You had to pay 66.89 % more for the games during the Insomnia sale than you have to pay now (as owner of the original games). :)

It sums up when GOG repeats it on other sales. ;)

Nice one!

Almost made me starting to feel trolled now :-p

But then I remember I don't own the classic versions here, so if I had to buy the bundle now I'd have to pay 41% more than I did in the Insomnia ;-)

Lemon_Curry: True, I just hope the original versions will be treated equally to the enhanced ones, that is as fully supported non-bonus material.
avatar
eiii: I hope it too. Maybe having them as separate games in the accounts of the people which already have bought them helps to keep up some pressure. Eventually these games still will be abandoned. That's what this step implies, I'm afraid. But as long as they at least provide the original games as they are it cannot get worse than what Double Fine does with Grim Fandango or Day of the Tentacle.
Yeah BUT the majority of people (i'd say 95%+) have the original vs the EE. I would hazard to guess only a small % of existing original owners will end up getting the EE at some point -- originals have been out a helluva lot longer -- GOG will have to keep supporting the original editions....

What i am curious about is which mods did all these enhanced editions use?. Are those given mods still available and will current versions still be compatible with the original games?.

Schnuff: It's funny...I still have my original boxes somewhere....and played them for mmh max 10 minutes.
Guess this games are just not my thing.
10 mins, ouch. Did you even get out of Candlekeep?

Is it genre thing, have you enjoyed other RPGs?

Not directly an answer to your question, but this link posted by Painted_Doll earlier in this thread at least lists which mods you don't need anymore for BG:EE. So they are probably applied or the issues are fixed in the engine itself.

PS: Thanks for the links, Painted_Doll!

dr.schliemann: Tempted like most of us, but GOG has been a bad boy towards my friend trentonlf and the other users who bought them during the Insomnia Sale, so I will probably pass.
avatar
trentonlf: Support stepped up. They credited me back my purchase from the insomnia sale and I was able to buy the games at a better discount :-)
As far as I know, everybody loves you, my friend: why GOG support shouldn't?
That's really cool of them, considering they weren't obliged: they proved once again how much customer care is important.

Well then, I suppose I have to change my mind. :-)
avatar
MaGo72: Please GOG, just mention "one" beneficial reason for the customer to bundle the EE versions with the classic versions which include many bonus items.
What would lead to to realistically assume that there's any chance that GOG made the decision unilaterally? I would make an educated guess that it was more likely a decision initiated by Hasbro and possibly Beamdog.
avatar
Matruchus: How big is going to be the price increase cause of the bundling?
This question actually already crossed my mind. I would hope at the very least that the base price of the EEs would remain the same.
avatar
lunaticox: You are removing choice from the customer, and forcing on them a product that many consider not worth their time and money.
avatar
Gersen: At least the original games are still available even if they are no longer sold separately.
avatar
Onox: However, I find that removing the ability to buy the old versions separately is certainly questionnable, too :/
If one really doesn't want anything to do with the EEs it's still possible to buy just the original games exactly how I did when I repurchased them about 10 years ago.

phaolo: Thanks, even if having to restore good original content in a Definitive Edition via mods is absurd. :\
You're welcome... While I agree with your opinion; in most cases I would prefer that the original setting, appearance, et cetera be the default and the new be an option selection. I don't like the new GUI setup and I find it difficult to believe that there's apparently no way to variable scale the GUI independently of the main game resolution; checking GUI scaling in the options locks the game to a 1080 vertical resolution. Would you rather there not even be an optional possibility to restore the original cut scenes?
avatar
Painted_Doll: Thanks.
You're welcome; I always liked that the BiG World Setup program made it relatively easy to more or less download and install multiple mods without having to worry about having to separately track down all the mods and maintain the correct install order. I still remember how long it would take to do by hand around 10 years ago.
avatar
Socratatus: I really wish you guys wouldn`t waste time on putting in achievements. Spend that time improving the mechanics and functionality.
Those also happens to be an extremely huge pet peeve of mine. I fail to understand how wasting resources on achievements improves gameplay.
avatar
zlep: High score screens are an equally pointless measurement of accomplishment, yet no one complains (or even comments) when they're in a game.
I don't know, that's why I'm asking; but when was the last time a non-arcade game implemented a high score screen?
avatar
Niggles: What i am curious about is which mods did all these enhanced editions use?. Are those given mods still available and will current versions still be compatible with the original games?
Most recent versions of IE mods are compatible with both the original an EE versions. If one is interested in using BiG World Setup for a mega mod installation and does so, it becomes extremely obvious that this is true.
avatar
Shendue: Some of us also care about other people, you know. What about those who stayed awake for DAYS to have an opportunity to get one (that, i shouldn't remember you, was scarcely offered on purpose to induce people into staying awake the whole time and eventually buy other stuff) and then got this big middle finger right in their face?
Nah, I'm sorry but i cannot agree with you. This is pure trolling.

amok: the morale is to never ever buy something, because it may become cheaper in a different sale at some other time.
I, for one, prefer to live in perpetual fear of someone else getting even a slightly better deal than I did on anything, and -- whenever this inevitably happens -- to complain about it not being fair. : |

(Also: "morale"? ;) )

Wait until November and ask anyone who gets cheap crap at Wal-Mart on Black Friday how they would feel about said crap being cheaper in a week.

I'm guessing you'll get an ear-full.

Indeed. Which is why I invented a way to exist in all locations of space and time simultaneously in order to get the best deal of anything anywhere and anywhen, both on Earth in 2016 ad and lightyears away billions of Earth years earlier or later.

By someone who's so easily manipulated by obvious loss leader marketing? Why should anyone care about that?...
