Hi,

I got myself the D&D pack from GOG a while ago during sales, which included dozens of games. I'd like to know in which order should I play, focusing on the major titles.

Thanks.

We're gonna need a list. At least I will as I've totally lost track of what's out there in the land of D&D. :D
oldest to newest
That depends on what you prefer in cRPG games. Planescape: Torment is mainly story focused, while Icewind Dale is based on combat. The Baldur's Gate is well balanced between both. I would recommend you to start with Baldur's Gate Saga, then pick Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale Saga as the last. That was about Infinity engine games, the next one I would recommend is Neverwinter Nights with its expansions and the other play in random order.

1.) Baldur's Gate
2.) Baldur's Gate 2
3.) Planescape Torment
4.) Icewind Dale
5.) Icewind Dale 2
5.) Neverwinter Nights
6.) Neverwinter Night 2

Rest = optional

7.) Temple of Elemental Evil
8.) Dragonshard
9.) Demon Stone

NWN with mods is a good place to start. Play through the vanilla campaign until you get bored, then go back and play some of the modules people released for it. There's the real fun.
Pretty much what makr3la & awalterj said! ;-)
If you're going to play them all, then release order. It's always release order.

If you however don't have years to spare, I'd recommend BG2 -> P:T -> IWD -> NWN.

So, what makr3la said, only drop the first BG, it'll just put you off the rest of the Infinity engine games. It's the most dated, and has a lot of pointless slow walking across empty maps. And the story somehow manages to be less interesting than the one in Icewind Dale, despite it being a combat-oriented game.

Oh, and NWN gets progressively better - so the last expansion is really damn good, while the original campaign has been known to induce boredom. Still better than BG :p
Simply put, it doesn't matter. That said, games that are direct sequels should be played in order. There will also be occasional references to previous games, but those are not really important. Just pick a game you think looks cool to you and play it. Except Demon Stone, just say no to that one.

EDIT: I wouldn't skip Baldur's Gate 1; it's true that the engine has aged, but there is a mod called Baldur's Gate Trilogy which allows you to play it in the BG 2 engine. Problem solved.

Or get BG and BG2 enhanced editions. :P But yeah BG TUTU is a GREAT mod.
BG/BG2 and then if you'd like more action IWD1/IWD2
If you'd like more story P:T

awalterj: 1.) Baldur's Gate
2.) Baldur's Gate 2
3.) Planescape Torment
4.) Icewind Dale
5.) Icewind Dale 2
5.) Neverwinter Nights
6.) Neverwinter Night 2

8.) Dragonshard

Arcanum is missing. Should be played after PS:T.
Apart from that, I think this answer is quite good!
Start with Baldur's Gate. It's the oldest. If it's too boring skip to the next.

The next three games to play are BG2 (the sequel, more noob friendly), Icewind Dale (freedom to create and play the party you want) and Planescape:Torment (a lot of dialogue text to read and story depth).
Choose the order you want.

As fifth game I would play Icewind Dale 2 (uses more modern rules with more freedom), the rest is optional.
