Leroux: IWD2 does not directly continue from IWD and I think you're supposed to create a new party
I would have loved to continue IWD2 with my IWD party that I created manually so carefully (even if they would have had to start as beginners), but apparently you have to create the IWD2 party from the scratch because it uses a different ruleset.

Oh well, I try to create a similar party...

kmonster: If you like Baldur's Gate then start with it. Afterwards check out what you want.
Either BG2 if you want to continue, Pool of Radiance (the old one, everything turn-based) or Eye of the Beholder (first person real-time action game) if you want a change.
I would add planescape torment

Green_Hilltop: Also I felt that you had more gods from Faerun there, like Helm, but now I see it's just Corellon and Moradin after all (unless any of the others exist on Faerun as well).
Garl Glittergold, Gruumsh and Yondalla also appear in both settings. Notice a pattern?

Green_Hilltop: Hm, now that I've seen the fan updates again, I'm thinking - how much better is the base campaign if you install the fan updates? Does the base game become more fun?
No idea. I have been trying to play the game for so long, but there is always something that stops me, be it real life, another game or the scrolling stuttering issues. I have currently installed it, along with Neverwinter Nights 2 and trying to find some time for both of them.

They're all racial gods?

Indeed. Or to be more precise, they are the creators of each of those respective races. :)

dtgreene: Not quite true.

The Gold Box games (Collection 2 and the Krynn series) are actually based on *1st* edition,
Is this the complete list of 1e games then, dt? I loaded up Strahd's Possession last night and it's definitely 2e.
One other thing to consider is the story/gameplay ratio. If you prefer gameplay-focused games, the older games and the Icewind Dale series are your best choices. If you prefer story-focused games (and are OK with the combat not being the focus of the game), then try Planescape: Torment. The Baldur's Gate games are more balanced. Also note that the Dark Sun games have considerably more dialogue than the older SSI games, but are still turn based.
