That "Superman: Doomed" collection looks like a really good deal: 500 pages for 4,49 Euro instead of 35,99 Euro - and a five-star customer rating. Can somebody tell me if I can read and enjoy that fully even if I have never read a "Superman"-comic before (but know the movies and "Smallville")?
Many of the DC trades on sale this week are really epic values well below the usual pricing for digital copies. I gladly spent more for the Knightfall books, etc.

I recommend Sinestro Corps War; that was one of the best storylines I've read in a while... Geoff John's Green Lantern stuff (much of it is included here) that I've read so far is epic.

Regarding Doomed, I'd recommend getting it. I haven't read the storyline yet but this occurs just 2 years out from DC Comics' 'New 52' reboot geared towards making their comics more new reader friendly by starting a newer continuity. There is some set-up in earlier books (Superman / Wonder Woman and Superman / Batman) but nothing that would seem essential to enjoying the collection here. You probably couldn't get a cheaper sampling of the New 52 Superman universe.

DC just put these individual issues on sale for $0.99 each and I thought I was getting a "deal" to get the slew of issues for ~$18 total.

Yep, wish I had waited and not bought those singles now. But there are 3 singles that weren't part of that sale, so I'll probably double dip.

When the 'crime' code accidentally discounted EVERYTHING by 50% I rushed in and bought the Knightfall trades, 52 trades, a few Green Lantern trades, and Brightest Day trades... now it seems the joke is on me because those would have been about $30+ cheaper in this deal.

I still prefer singles so bought a bunch of DC stuff that I'm sure will turn up in a sale soon.

Thanks for the advice - I guess I'm gonna buy it. :)

I agree, and I'm in a similar situation (although I've read a few Superman comics, but never really took to them; Death of Superman is one of the worst comic books I've ever read). Having read some reviews on Amazon.com, I'm still worried whether it will be a bit of a drag, and those 500 pages aren't as good a deal as they seem. Still, I'll probably end up buying this and cursing every moment, or something like that. :)

Edit: I'm currently thinking of buying Green Lantern: The Sinestro Corps War and Forever Evil, with Superman: Doomed an optional third that I'm more worried about.

Death of Superman is a really bad comic; I definitely wouldn't consider that mess a typical example of DC Comics.

I imagine so, but someone on Amazon likened Superman: Doomed to Death and Life of Superman, which worried me.
Bought the three books I mentioned. I'm still worried that I won't enjoy Superman: Doomed, but we'll see. Doomsday looks to me like a really boring villain.
I promise to never buy these, but digital variant covers are now a thing.
