madth3: This content is only available via the free IDW app.
yeah, but are those comics with DRM?

Because it also says

Lifetime Ownership
Download and keep your eBooks forever.

Instant Delivery
Your eBooks are available to read in minutes.

Multiple File Types
You choose how you want to read your eBooks.

I don't mind if I need IDW app to download drm-free files to my HD. But if those are DRMed, then I'm not interested

You're right.

The FAQ in the IDW app says: "We are no longer offering DRM Free downloads at this time", so it looks like false advertising on Fanatical's part. I wrote to ask them about it, just to be sure, we'll see what they say.

Edit: they replied that the books are indeed DRM-ed by the IDW app. Bummer.

SLP2000: Please confirm that your offer is still valid and I'll buy CrossCode + DLCs as a gift.
Sure, that's still fine, but first:
It looks like your privacy settings are set to disallow chat messages from "everyone", so please accept the friend request I've sent just now.
I've gotta go do some things right away, but I can buy that comics bundle for you after I get back in some hours (which'll likely be after you go to bed, if you're in Poland, I guess).

I fixed that and I already sent you the code to redeem CrossCode + DLCs.

Thank you! And I've now sent you the Humble gift link. *crosses fingers*
Dark Horse shut down their digital store as of today, with no prior warning, which shows how little they value their customers, it seems..

I don't understand why won't GOG step in. Contrary to movie industry, there are many comic publishers who had their own stores with DRM free comics in the past (Image, Dark Horse) or sold them on Comixology. Some have them now (Rebellion, umanoids) or use Humble Bundle/Fanatical (Dynamite, IDW, Boom, Oni, Fantagraphics). So, a lot of publishers open to DRM-free market but apart of Humble Bundles, no stores.

Good Old Comics.
I wish I had never bought a single comic on both Dark Horse Digital and comiXology. It shouldn't be long until the former is closed entirely...

That workaround for downloading your comics no longer works, right? If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing.

@SLP2000, was redeeming that Top Shelf bundle straightforward? Did you have to use a VPN or redeem it on an Humble account from a different region? I'm thinking of asking someone to buy it as a gift for me as well.

No problem at all, no VPN needed and I used my account to redeem it.

Yeah, it's really atrocious. Luckily I haven't bought too many comics from them (a few bundles) because I have a feeling that sooner or later we won't even be able to read them in the browser. I really don't understand what they are thinking with this kind of behaviour. IMO that hurts not just them but the whole (digital) comics universe becaust trust is massively eroding.

Less important, but I wonder if this also means the end of Dark Horse Humble Bundles. They'll probably have a few more with old stuff but nothing new anymore ...

Well there's DriveThruComics, which has been around a long time and does have some of the bigger indie publishers (Aspen, Dynamite, Rebellion, Top Cow). So there's already an established storefront for publishers to take advantage of if they chose to. Though from a customer's standpoint DriveThruComics isn't ideal since they mainly offer PDFs and annoyingly let publishers watermark them.

I think that's up in the air. Dark Horse's parent company (Embracer) just went through a big restructuring and I wouldn't be surprised if the shuttering of their digital store is a related cost-cutting measure. Since bundles are a one-off without much for the publisher to do, maybe there's still hope for more in the future.
For those interested, some recommended this browser script to download Dark Horse books from ones library to a cbz file. Haven't tried it myself, but saw that it worked for some:

+1

It seemed to get stuck in Firefox but it worked in Chrome+Tampermonkey.

BTW, From the FAQ

Did I lose access to my comics collection?
You can continue to log in to the DHD website and read the comics in your bookshelf. We plan for online access to be available at least through summer, 2025. When the website is eventually retired, online access will end.

Well, great. Fuck them.
