It seems that in just 24 hours Cyberpunk 2077 (yeah, I'm ignoring the pre-orders) managed to climb to 2nd in GOG sales of all time, right behind Heroes of Might and Magic III and ahead of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

It's impossible to gauge how many sales HoMM III was ahead of The Witcher 2, so in a sense there's no way of telling if Cyberpunk 2077 will be first place anytime soon.

In any case, "good job, CDPR," I guess?
This thing is going to dethrone HoM&M III?

Someone should call New world computing and tell them 3DO looks like a safe bet.
Its been #2 for quite some time now.

Strange that HOMM3 is #1 though - never understood that... TBS arent that popular...

But.... HOMM3! On a more serious note, back in the day, everyone I knew who'd come into contact with HOMM3 (especially Hot Seat multiplayer) would get infected with Heroes of Might & Magic 3 addiction. Some of us play it still, though we're too old to play Hot Seat anymore.

As for CP2077, it was #3 earlier today. Decided to check again 10+ hours later.

Maybe... but HoMM3 is like the perfect game of its genre.

I think Witcher 3 would be No. 1 if they merged the base game and the GOTY-edition.
The day HoMM3 is dethroned will surely be the day the world, as we know it, will end. The end of an era, at least in gaming terms.

The series has been iconic and the games produced by 3DO have become more than games. An art form of a time long past that is still cherished by many and ever so hard to capture, even with all the graphical bells and whistles of today and RTX on.

Then the people who saw CP2077 as the second coming would have been right... kind of a sad thought.

I mean, I would probably love the game (if it ran on my machine), and I'm not a fan of HoMM (because I suck at it, prefer 4X when it comes to TBS), but I can acknowledge perfection when I see it, even if it's not for me.

I certainly have the hardware to run CP2077 and undoubtedly I will play it and enjoy it at some point... probably when they've ironed out most of the bugs.

But ask me at this very moment what was the last game I played and I'll have to answer HoMM2. Yes, in DOSBox. I'm still trying to finish "The Price of Loyalty" campaign :). And the game works like a champ on my fanless cheapo netbook.

Even when I don't have time to play much, I sometimes start a HoMM2, 3 or 4 game just to listen to some of the town music tracks. The games are artistic masterpieces in many ways.

I guess you never played it then. It's phenomenon. By example of Poland, it's one of the very few video games that are/were played even by people who don't really care about gaming and regardless of gender or age. The only comparable titles could be Deluxe Ski Jump 2 and Worms Armageddon/World Party. Because those were perfect party games to play on one PC in times when internet multiplayer wasn't available for everyone and with simple enough rules for anyone to enjoy.

The HoMM 2 soundtrack is the most amazing though.

Well, I started playing Prey (the one by Arkane) out of frustration, and it's really amazing, and runs at 60 FPS all the time.
And it's even "kind of" open-world it seems. Not seamless of course, but who cares. :-)

You are guessing wrong... (Not one of those people who misinterpret their own preferences with overall popularity.)

But I dont think its anywhere near perfect. Like the overland hero gfx not making sense (bald bearded dwarf looks like blonde elf girl etc IIRC). Or the AI cheating (it can see through the fog for threat assessment IIRC).

Of course it's not perfect, there are many issues like it's very unbalanced for once, but that's not the point. It's the "easy to play, hard to master" type of game with great music, great design and characteristic factions and units, which makes it so attractive. The flaws are nothing compared to fun it gives, especially in hot seat mode. I'd say most people suck at this game and they still enjoy it tremendously, that speaks for itself. I suck at this game. When I watch pros at competitive scene it's like completely different game from what I know.

Not necessarily (depending on "quite some time now"). It was at #3 when the game was first released for at least a few hours. I remember a few weeks ago seeing it farther down the list but still on the front page.

I imagine HoMM3 will be hard to dethrone, but then again I really didn't expect CP2077 to reach #2 so quickly either.

According to Steam, CP2077 had almost 1M players today at one point: https://store.steampowered.com/stats/

Can't find any numbers on the total users of GOG (which would help gauge a whereabouts number for HOMM3), but if The Witcher 3 numbers are anything to go by, and with this already topping that, it wouldn't be surprising if HOMM3 is dethroned.

Is 'bestselling' ranking based on money or on number of sales or something in-between?
