Given all the recent discussions on Galaxy and the strong sentiment against it, how many would not purchase Cyberpunk 2077 is it required Galaxy?

For me, I would refuse to purchase it, and just start working on my backlog of games instead. Although not my particular type of game, I was still going to pre order, just to support GOG and CDPR for having DRM free games. Given their recent announcements, I am wondering what will occur.


I have to give proper credit as to why I asked this question.

I saw Klumpen0815's post:

By now, region locks are common, regional pricing is the rule instead of the exception as was promised, online multiplayer becomes mostly Galaxy only by now (exceptions: Screencheat, Terraria and a few others), they plan to add Galaxy to everything (see the last shitstorm) and you can bet that this isn't the last we've seen of microtransactions around here.

CDPR has always been the precedent for lowering policy standards around here.
GOG never stood a chance of keeping true to its mission statement under the control of CDP."

As it is right now, I am not buying anything from GOG until they reverse their new Galaxy-mandated DRM and go back to the Galaxy-free, DRM-free, offline single-player and offline installer modes again.

As for the Region Locks and Region Pricing, I am fine with that because it allows more games here. Every country has different taxation, different laws, different governance, different requirements and regulations that create different pricing and region locking.

Well the game will apparently have some optional multiplayer option, so this part will most likely use Galaxy, the game will also probably have achivements and cloud save and for that Galaxy will be used too.

Appart from that it will most likely works like any other games (that are not a multiplayer beta) here with it running without needing Galaxy.

But then the game won't be released before at least a year if not a couple of years, so it's maybe a little too early to worry about how and on what it will work.

Depends on how it uses galaxy.....
Guessing that would be how it's used for games now, to allow achievement etc.....that's fine.
If it's needed to launch the game/any game, that's a instant No.

I won't touch anything that requires Galaxy. Simple as that.

And if anyone here seriously thinks Cyberpunk might not require Galaxy - man, do I have a bridge to sell you.

I don't give a crap about multiplayer, so if it requires Galaxy for that but can be installed and the single player campaign played without having to install Galaxy, then I'll buy it. Otherwise, no purchase.

I will not be surprised if they drop the DRM-free policy for Cyberpunk 2077.

If CDPR did not develop their own games, that would be a totally different story and they would probably stick to their policy since it is the major selling point of GOG.

But they obviously see GOG's future mainly as a distribution platform for their own games (someone recently posted a link to their strategy papers, don't know in which thread).

When Witcher 3 was released CDPR management must have discussed the option to make it GOG-exclusive, but finally they have not been bold enough yet, afraid of losing sales. But since then - and mainly through that game - the user base has increased, GOG become more well-known, and making Cyberpunk 2077 GOG-exclusive will be the next logical step, at least for a few weeks so the players who boarded the hype train and want to play immediately after release will buy it on GOG. And in that case it may also require Galaxy with no or only seriously crippled (as in slow updates, missing basic features) offline installers available, in other words drop DRM-free.

Steam takes a big piece of the revenue cake, so it is understandable to build one's own platform as EA and Ubisoft did in the past. And for such a big AAA game as Cyberpunk 2077, we are talking about millions of dollars here per percentage point. They can earn more within a few months than with operating the GOG platform for years. Realizing that, upsetting some old, grumpy "classic users" (like the new "classic installers" we will get until the shitstorm has calmed down... Funny, is it not?) will not be a hard decision...

Maybe I am being too pessimistic here, or is it realistic? The recent development is not encouraging.

Then they lost their last and strongest remaining difference to steam; there wont be any reason to be here anymore. I did not refuse to get games like Skyrim because they are not on gog; I refuse them because of their online DRM.

I might still be kind of ok with such if it works without galaxy but galaxy become the only option to get the independent offline installers. But I do will recognize it as what it is: gog next step to attempting suicide (or gog getting murdered by some pro-drm freak they accidentally hired and somehow cannot get rid of; whatever it is, results will be the same).

If the game was being designed as multiplayer-only from the get go, then I wouldn't mind the Galaxy requirement as it would be no different then other games here that require Galaxy for multiplayer (other than, of course, those games also having single-player content). But requiring Galaxy for the single-player part will get you a blistering "NO" from me and basically all other forumites. At that point you just go to Steam.

Wrong game, but correct company. It was The Witcher Adventure Game from what I recall. At least it was during the beta testing phase, later on it seems to have added a single player portion as well and no longer require either being online or using Galaxy, but I haven't played it for quite some time now, so I may be mistaken.

Will have to see at release, there is no telling what they will do next, maybe a cyberpunk store where you can buy and sell in game items? To be honest I didn't think much of witcher 3 though, typical modern day action adventure with lots of shaders and the depth of a puddle.

Any game I want where Galaxy is mandatory I will simply purchase from Steam instead. If GOG does this often enough I will stop buying from here entirely and switch over to Steam. The entire reason I started shopping here in the first place was for DRM free, not for some shitty client/bloatware.

And yes, a program that does not allow the option to download offline installers that can be run independent of said client IS DRM. Give me the option to make Galaxy function like the old GOG Downloader and my problem with client largely goes away. Requiring Galaxy everytime I want to install/update a game? There's literally no good reason for me to not simply use Steam instead at that point.

I don't think they'll make Galaxy mandatory. As for those threatening to switch to Steam, go ahead, make GabeN richer and help him establish his monopoly on PC gaming.

I honestly don't get people who say they are going to do that. "What, you require me to use a client?! No way! I'm going to switch to that other store that requires me to use a client!"

Yep, if you look at the record it would be the next logical step.
They of course factually have already dropped the DRM-free principle but they probably will drop all pretense then.

I would mind and other multiplayer-only games get along without Galaxy too.
Screencheat is surprisingly fun btw, I highly recommend it. Made even me play online again a few times which is saying a lot.
I've got it on Humble and this version did work perfectly with Steam players, no idea about GOG's package but I'd guess it should work too.

Ahh good to know. I thought about that one but couldn't find any proof without some effort since it doesn't mention mandatory Galaxy on the page anymore.
