If GOG loses everything they stand for and just becomes a poor man's Steam, why not?

Benefits of Steam:
- Almost any PC game is available on Steam.
- The scheduling, automatic updates and general infrastructure is way better.
- The support for mods is way better
- Cloud saves and other features are miles ahead in the quality department

So yeah... if GOG loses all the values that separated it from Steam, what reasons are there to stick with it?

While I don't really understand his "I hate clients so I'll go to steam then" approach there are quite a few who do not mind clients that much and would go to steam (origin/ubistore) because at that point it would be the more reliable choice opposed to gogs boasting of core principals; up to even mocking the lack of those in video clips followed by scratching one after the other and also because steam has a bigger choice of games.

Other players that hate online DRM would either go to one of the other not-that-well sorted DRM free stores; quit getting new games and slowly get into other hobbys or bit the bullet and accept online DRM in singleplayer games.. and then go to steam/origin/ubistore because, again, quantity and probably disappointment in gog.

If it requires Galaxy, to be honest, i would buy it on Steam, provided it did not use Galaxy there as well.
One Client is more than enough.

Also, i hope they will not install Galaxy by default on an install from disc. I did not like that with Witcher 3 at all, and it caused me problems with other GoG games in the long run.

If Cyberpunk 2077 requires galaxy then I will not be buying it, only reason I buy games here is because they are DRM Free, anything that requires DRM ad ridden rentware (origin, steam, galaxy etc) is off my list.

It's bad enough they thought sticking galaxy crap into offline installers was a good idea, but forcing galaxy into a game goes against what this site is meant to be & I imagine it'd lose them a load of customers.

As it is, I already quit buying here before that happened & now buy through legit key stores or preferably the direct from the devs themselves, so that I can still get DRM free, or at least for games that are steam only so that steam get less (or none at all) money.

If the game does require galaxy, then I don't see why anyone wouldn't just use steam anyway.
Client has been out a hell of a lot longer, is more proven & tested & actually gives you access (for those that want it) to more players to group with/against in PvE & PvP games.

Hell, even the delivery of updates & real patches (not full re-DLs) is better there, with some games here being years out of date. Also good luck even finding out if the games are patched here now there's no notifications (P.S. Did you know gogdownloader alerts you to forum message replies? I didn't until I started a TW3 DL last night... Even this site fails on that these days)

Just look at Grim Dawn (sure it was that game) where despite the ability to play cross clients was possible, it got removed (or blocked or wtf they did to it here) so that you have to use something like Tuungle to play with others.

If you don't need galaxy to play the game & they don't force a DL of a pointless galaxy, then no problem, but time'll tell...

This right here can be very dangerous, buying out of loyalty tends to give more power to a company allowing them to more things that are actually anti-consumer but can lead to people defending those actions since they are loyal to the company.

Valve is a prime example of this as they got people accept DRM so they could play Half-Life 2 and this had a domino affect which lead to:

- people accepting EULA's which removed your rights to actually own the games you bought

- Steam Greenlight which flooded the marketplace with poor quality games made for a quick buck

- Microtransactions (Valve brought this into the mainstream and they are the first company to put microtransactions into a retail price game, Team Fortress 2 before it went free to play).

- Paid Mods. Note: I'm all for mod creators getting some compensation for there work (donations) but the system that Steam had setup had most of the profits going to Steam and the publishers for someone else s work, with system in place were they could get 100% of the profits of anothers work if it didn't make a certain sales threshold.

- Valve forcing polices on other publishers (Valve wanted EA to sell DLC directly on Steam so they could get a cut of the profits of it however EA was content by selling it in game, it was Valve that pulled future EA games from Steam, which could be seen as the foundation to Origin, but most people just blamed EA for being greedy when the truth was that it was Valve that was the greedy one.

- Hat and key economy and the CSGO gambling issue. Valve knew this was happening in there games but did nothing to curb or stop it since they were indirectly making money off of it through the selling of keys and other digital items. they only interceded when this was exposed. Plus you have people buying games and not even playing them to get hat and card items to resell. Valve has created these economies and they are profiting off of the collective/addictive nature of it.

How about you wait for Cyberpunk actually get a released here and see what they'll implement in it:
a "optional" Galaxy DRM version or DRM-free version with "optional" features.

And I don't remember GoG saying they'll not allow microstransaction games here.

I don't get it actually, where all this panic come from? As far as i know, Galaxy is completely optional for single player and most of multiplayer. And I don't think that GOG will stop being DRM-free store because it will do more harm to them than good. People will just go to Steam because of much more bigger games range. Guys, we still haven't seen anything about Cyberpunk 2077 except for one cinematic trailer. Maybe, before panicking, we should wait and see what happens? And? Ask not GOG, but governments in that regions. Or you want them banned from some countries? And? You want to put prices high like in Europe or USA? Then they will lose all customers from poor countries. And, by the way, 1$ in poor country may "cost" much more than 10$ in USA. Don't see any problem here - they have their OPTIONAL client for their new game. So? This is type of games which MUST have microtransactions - that is how they live. Or you want crew that created and support GWENT to work for nothing, on pure enthusiasm? 1. If microtransactions is meaning that more new games come to GOG - it is fine by me. They are, actually, totally optional in most cases.

2. They added OPTIONAL Galaxy which you can to refuse to install. So, they added DRM and single player games stopped working offline without Galaxy???

Bit too early to talk about it, I mean, if we're lucky, 2077 will come out 2020, but seeing that we've heard reports about crappy multiplayer elements in the Cyberpunk game, I wouldn't be personally surprised if they made Galaxy a requirement even if you're strictly single player, all justified with the "living, breathing world" they're trying to give players.

In short, same silly excuse, same screwover policy as the Elite Dangerous twatwaffles.

But for all the negativity I'm more than ready to spread, I don't think that GOG necessarily makes that dick move.

You are barking at the wrong tree then. GOG.com can't do anything about it.
You'd have to make yourself heard by CD Project Red - the developers of the game - or better yet by CD Project, the parent company of both that in the end is deciding about what kinds of DRM to implement and where to sell it.

Are you sure they are not working in the same building? People split up their companies to protect assets in case of bankruptcy by 1 element, they might all be working side by side!

To be honest I have no idea where I would get myself heard by the latter 2 you mention, so for now this is my only venue to be heard since they are connected it is fair to hope that if there is enough noice it will be heard higher up.

The recent developments are indeed somewhat grim.
However, I don't really get this argument of pro-DRM-free gamers being "some" or "few" or "old" here on GOG. DRM-free was always the selling point of GOG. Why else would I have chosen it over steam which sells a significantly larger catalogue way cheaper than GOG and also supports my local currency? And the 3rd highest voted wish in the Features section of the Community Wishlist is "Continue to be a DRM-free store, today, tomorrow and forever!".
