Once upon a time there was a little mouse named Harriet. She had lovely long whiskers, coal-black eyes that shone like diamonds and a long tail that curled like a question mark. The apartment where she lived was warm and cozy, and situated in a wall inside a baker's shop. She had two good friends, Cayde, a large white raven and Bonnet, the doberman that lived with the Butcher next door.
One day....
It was a cloudy day, the kind where a little breeze would give you a chill. Harriet knew she should have worn a light jacket today, but Cayde assured her it would not be needed.
"Gotta remember not to ask someone with feathers about the weather" she muttered.
But a little chill was not going to dampen her mood, today was the day. After weeks of convincing Bonnet he finally relented and was going to take her on his rounds! Harriet's whiskers trembled with excitement just thinking aobut it.
"Deputy Harriet" she said with a smile that went from ear to ear. "That has such a nice ring to it"
Bonnet was waiting for her at his door wearing a dusty and worn straw hat that had a star in the middle of it that said "Sherrif"
"Morning Harriet" Bonnet drawled "are you ready"
"Yes sir" Harriet twittered nervously
Bonnet smiled "No need to worry little one, this will be a fine day to check the area". Bonnet pushed a small box with a little red bow on top toward Harriet.
"You don't need to give me a gift!" Harriet said in surprise, unsure what to do.
"Well Cayde insisted, and you know as well as I do that if Cayde is insisting there is no stopping him" chuckled Bonnet
As Harriet opened the box her eyes lit up with excitement. Bonnet smiled even more as he watched her pull out a little jacket with a star on the left breast emblazoned with "Deputy in training". Harriet hugged the jacket to her chest and with tears in her eyes said "Oh Bonnet, it's perfect! Where is Cayde, I need to thank him too!"
Just then a shadow fell over her as Cayde circled above. "I told you a jacket was not necessary today" Cayde chortled. He slowly descended and landed next to Harriet, cocking his head to the side "I hope it fits, hard to find a jacket your size"
Harriet slipped the jacket on, twirled around for her friends to see "It fits perfect, thank you so much!"
"Alrighty then little one, are you ready to get to work" Bonnet said "We have a busy day ahead. Have to check out an abandoned van by the park, I don't like the looks of it. No reason for it to be there. Cayde has been keeping an eye on it the past few days, but has not seen it move"
"Has not moved at all" said Cayde "But I think I saw some smoke come out of a side window yesterday. Tried to get a closer look, but the front window is covered and the rest of the windows are too dark"
Bonnet gave Harriet a serious look "This should be an easy chore today, just need to get a closer look inside the van. You stay by my side at all times"
Harriet placed her paw across her heart "I promise Bon"
Bonnet pushed his hat down on his head "Okay then, Cayde you fly ahead and scout things out. We'll be along shortly to get a closer look" He bent down so Harriet could climb on his back.
Cayde set off toward the park as Bonnet and Harriet followed behind. There was no activity in the area, it was early still and the weather was keeping most in. Bonnet saw Cayde sitting in a tree close to the van, preening his feathers. That was a signal that all was well, so Bonnet started sniffing around to see what was going on. As he neared the van he could smell something musky, a scent he had not encounterd before. Something wasn't right, he could feel it. Bonnet was turning to leave and rethink what to do when all of a sudden the side door of the van flew open. Bonnet jumped in surprise, causing Harriet to tumble off his back and land a few feet away momentarily stunned. A man jumped out of the door tossing a weighted net over Bonnet, pinning him to the ground. The man pulled the net tight, picking Bonnet up and tossing him into the van. The man jumped back through the side, slamming the door. The van's engine cranked to life, and it peeled out of it's spot headed out of town.
Cayde screeched and flew down from the tree, but was too late in stoppin the man from putting Bonnet in the van. He started to give chase, but turned arond to make sure Harriet was ok. He landed gently next to her, nudging her with his beak. "Harriet, are you ok!" he asked worriedly
Harriet sat up, dazed looking around "Wh.. wh.. what happened? Where's Bon?"
"If you are ok, I need to go. Someone took Bonnet away in the van and they are going to get away if I don't follow them" Cayde said anxiously. "We are close to home, you go there and I will find you later when I can"
Harriet watched as Cayde started to spread his wings to fly "No Cayde, wait!" she shouted "I need to go with you"
"No Harriet, this is too dangerous. If something happened to you and Bonnet both I could not live with myself!" Cayde cried
With a voice of Steel Harriet said "No Cayde, we will do this together. Bon is as dear to me as you are, and I WILL NOT sit by and do nothing. Don't even try and stop me"
Cayde took one look at Harriet's firm countenance and nodded his head "Climb on"
