The year 1877 saw the enactement of the Dawes Act, that encouraged the natives to claim part of their tribe land for themselves and become american citizens. In practice, the land privately taken by natives slowly slipped into the hands of white owners through heirloom and sales, and split up the original tribal society into regular american households.
