We don't have A/C in the house so I end up using a standing fan to keep me cool-er during the summer months. My current el cheapo fan I bought three years ago looks like it might be giving up its ghost soon. The oscillating part went kaputt today, as in a piece of it literally broke off all on its own, and I'm wondering how long until the rest of it goes as well. It was a decent enough investment for the $30-some I put in, but this is a good time as any to think about an upgrade.

Can anyone who's US-based recommend a good one? My replacement budget would probably be $100-200. I just want to make sure I get a decent one, not just the first thing that I come across the store shelf. That's pretty much what I did last time when I was a bit tight on money after moving to a new city.

I've looked into evaporative coolers some time ago, but apparently they may not be good for places that are even somewhat humid as the the machines may create a negative effect in turn. Where I live the average humidity is typically 60-70%, so that may be not such a good idea... =/

If you aren't renting, ceiling fans are great and cheap to install and run.
Basic box fans perhaps.

If the humidity isn't too high, another option for keeping yourself cool is evaporation, specifically I've worn do-rags or similar cloths on my head and wet it down so it's just moist. Walking in blazing hot weather and it's considerably cooler. Simple T-shirts getting to that same wet/moist level also does wonders.

Although that doesn't really lower the temperature of the room...
I recommend using scantily clad women waving palm fronds instead.
I like these.

I'm a big fan of the box fan. You line up 2,3, or 4 of those things depending on size of the house and you could get a nice breeze going.

Some fan tips:
1. Try to keep your curtains drawn throughout the house.
2. Run the fan at night set just outside the backyard door. Your going to bring in cooler air into the house.
3. Get oscillating fans going in the areas that aren't in the direct path of the box fan breeze.
4. You want to close your doors and windows just before the outside starts to heat up on day start.

Yeah, unfortunately, I seem to be the only one in the house able to do any proper house cooling. *le sigh* Throw open all windows when it starts cooling down in the evening and closing them again in the morning to keep the temperatures down. Still can get pretty toasty on a hot day, nonetheless.

As for box fans, my living space is not exactly cut out for those. Mostly, I'm looking for a better quality standing fan than that of the now half-broken Lasko cheapo I have sitting in my bedroom.

LOL. I wasn't sure at first what "A/C" stands for, I figured it is probably "alternating current" so you don't have any electricity at home, and you are looking for some standing fan that you operate yourself. :)

I have a portable air conditioner at home (yeah, once in a while it might get so hot indoors even here that a mere fan isn't enough...), it is pretty ok but quite loud unfortunately, almost like a vacuum cleaner (lower sound, though). I presume you can easily get one for that $100-200, though?

Yeah, I have absolutely no idea why they sell those units even in Thailand (where it is very humid). I know someone who bought one there as he didn't really understand how it operates, and it was worthless there, making one just sweat even more. :) They might work much better in dry Arab countries, or Arizona or Nevada.

I've had a "Lasko 2551 Wind Curve Platinum Tower Fan With Remote Control and Fresh Air Ionizer" (bought from Amazon.com) for a couple of years now & it's still a good fan.

If you live where the climate is more dry, an "Evaporative Air Cooler" may be something worth checking out though they tend to cost more than fans but less than AC

A fan?
In the forums you have a lots of fans between you can select: MS fans, Valve Fans, Linux Fans... and of course, GOG fans.
i don't mind the heat - heat makes me sweat and my body smells so good to me idk why. it's like i'm made of sugar! when i was 14 i went in visit to a family friend who had a dog Ajax. idk if that dog was gay or not but first thing when it sees it, it quickly put its nose between my legs and started smelling like crazy! i'm serious that's how good i smell. you should smell me too! :P
I don't know much about fans, but here's a guide about how to get rid of it:
