It is from the perspective of having a healthy break from the Gothic series, while a lot of Gothic 2 ideas can be found in Risen like the Monastery, Waterfall cave, chests with locks, way of interaction, power items, and the island itself... yet it gives fresh exotic world you can compare with this superior fanmade gothic2 based story https://www.gog.com/pl/game/the_chronicles_of_myrtana_archolos , and then you can play really good pirate RPG Risen 2 or come back to Gothic world 3 to do a final deal with orcs Hopefully, the word spin-off would not hurt anyone's feelings, the game looks good yet I never tried but will, I feel the same with Risen 3 which is full of everything, still a good game.

Are you restricting yourself only to the first Gothic?

Because it is one of the best open-world RPG series out there. Gothic 3 was better than even Oblivion back in the day. At least, after the community patch fixed everything. The soundtrack alone - damn, Kai Rosenkrantz's melodies still send a chill down my spine.

I came late to the party with Gothic 1 and 2, and even though I enjoyed them a lot, I wouldn't say they are better than 3 for a recent playthrough and a newcomer. I think nostalgia plays a big part when people go on about Gothic 1/2 vs 3.

But the whole trilogy is def worth it. I would actually go with Gothic 3 first, then 1 and 2. Then Risen 1, because it is amazing and very underrated. Skip Risen 2 and 3 if you don't like rum and the pirate theme. Elex 1 and 2 are on my to-game-list.

Remember! The janky combat is a feature and it's awesome!

Despite being a fan of the whole package... this statement is accurate.
Although everybody should play at least Gothic 1 and 2 eventually, they're great.
