FearfulSymmetry: *hijacking your conversation with Crow again* I wanted to play the old RPGs first as well, but I've been stuck near the beginning of the first Baldur's gate for a while now ... Just couldn't really get into it at the moment. So I did decide to fire up Pillars and now it's taking over my life. :P

CarrionCrow: And now, we hijack the hijacking. ;P

Baldur's Gate 1 isn't easy to get into. It's very slow, and D&D games always come with the problem that you're incredibly weak when you start out.
Does not getting past the first screen count? :P
I hate creating characters in games and distributing their stats at the start.
Never know what I should put points into as ya know I haven't actually played the game yet.

Hahaha. :P

Yep, and I'm not someone who enjoys difficulty for difficulty's sake. I usually play games on easy given the choice, since story/characters/atmosphere are much more important for me. Still, I'm determined to beat it some day.

Empress_Owl: Haha... good luck then ^^ it might take some time...
Yes ! I liked it very much yes, it's my second favourite Wadjet Eye game right after Blackwell series... I can't decide which one I prefer from Technobabylon or this one, though... hey, we must finish Technobabylon !!! ):-| I want to know the end...
I updated my list, yeah... thanks for the link !! you're a very good secretary ;-) **giggle**
Null sweat - I've got nothing but time ):-|
Resonance is my second favourite too :-) but I do have a difficult time trying to rank all of them (except that Blackwell = first, Gemini Rue = last ;-p) ... Yes! I can't wait to finish Techno! Then onto Shardlight! 8-)
Hihi... I was wondering where that dress went. Thanks ;-)

edit : **Big courage hug** Take care and have a good day, Owl!

Have a nice day at work, lovely Owl. I hope it won't be too stressful for you.

That was part of my logic. Another problem for me is time. Those kind of RPGs take a long time, so I am wondering if I should get a nice refined modern version in case I only get around to playing just one RPG for a while, or do I stick with the older ones that I already own, even if they are a little aged.

avatar
CarrionCrow: The big question for that one is, do you like Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale? Pillars is an updated, refined version of those classic games, mechanically speaking.
If you've played those and didn't like them, Pillars would be a waste of money.
I do recall playing a Baldur's Gate game on the GameCube, but those are not quite the same. I did enjoy it, but I have yet to try the PC games. As I said to Fearful, because for the most part my gaming time is limited part of my problem is deciding to play the old ones first, or get a more modern and refined game to play just in case I only get around to playing one RPG. I figured it might be easier to get into a modern one that does not have the faults older games tend to have. But on the other hand I am not sure I could do that since I have the older ones unplayed and I would feel like I needed to play them first, especially as you lovely people gifted them to me. So I think I am best to just wait and play the older games first.

It depends on what you're playing, with those games.

Fighter? Strength, dexterity and constitution. Go as high as possible with all three. Drop your wisdom, intelligence and charisma to 8, that's as low as they can go without you getting penalties.

Thief? Dexterity. It improves their thief skill percentages and gets you 10 percent bonus experience if it's 16 or better.
Everything else can go as low as 8, but strength and constitution are useful so you can hit when you have to, have better carrying capacity, and have hit point bonuses, which thieves need since they only get 1-6 points when they level.

Mage? Intelligence, as high as possible. Keep everything else but dexterity as 8. Put dexterity at 18 to improve your chance to avoid being hit. Put constitution at 16. Mages need the extra hit point bonus, but anything above 16 only applies for fighters.

Cleric? Wisdom first, so you can get extra spells. You want wisdom 18. Charisma, intelligence, they can both be 8. Put more points into strength, dexterity and constitution, as many as you can. Clerics can wear armor and still be able to cast spells. They will be your secondary front-line fighter, or your primary if you don't have a dedicated fighter at the time.

CarrionCrow: The misadventures of Joker Rabbit, European Trucker...
Having reached highway infamy with his unbeaten record of 273 arrests for various vehicle-related crimes up to and including sodomy of a police officer with their own club while speeding in a school zone, his legend only grew when he became the only man to complete the 1983 Three Gallons/Three Thousand Kilometers No Bathroom Challenge, reputed to have driven for 16 days straight while believing he was a koala bear named Bernie who only spoke Swahili as he consumed fourteen bags of homemade crystal meth, loving father of 17 separate truck stop parking lot prostitution-conceived children...
That... is... so... beautiful!

AgentBirdnest: Good question :-|
I'd go with the original mode first. Advanced mode is more complicated - it might be better to get to know the original game before turning it on.
Thank you. I know you can't rename characters in the original version. So maybe I will play a few times on that version, then try the advanced version when I rename the characters to the Fred crew. How much more complicated would you say the advanced version is compared to the regular version?

It's not just a video game mechanic thing, they based it all on the 2nd edition version of Dungeons and Dragons. The rules were just made that way, so your character's essentially made out of tissue paper until around level 3, and they don't get access to game changers until level 5.

Ah alright, guess I'll try again sometime.
Don't really want to get far in a game and fail due to not building my character properly.
This happened to me in the very last area of Torchlight.
It was a breeze suddenly get killed in 2 shots near the end.

Sidenote: before playing Huniepop I decided to uncensor it.
I kind of regret this now after seeing the pictures you get. :l

Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance has about as much to do with original Baldur's Gate as a hippo in a tutu has to do with a ballerina. They might both be kinda wearing the same outfit, but everything else is utterly different.

In the end, it's up to you which you prefer. Whether people have gifted you stuff or not, odds are pretty good they wouldn't want you to be miserable if you don't enjoy it.
I think the original series still have good gameplay experiences to provide for players. Other opinions will vary, of course.
If you really hate it, don't play it, whether you feel obligated to run through the old series or not.

Hmm. Guess they decided to spike the difficulty right before the end. Always a sign of designers who don't know how to do the whole difficulty curve thing properly.

Pretty sure you can remove the file that uncensors the game if it's bothering you. Worth a shot.

Until you get to level 16 and get yourself a set of dragon scale armour and vorpal blades. Then you walk around like you were kryptonian.
Level 20 Wizards swag like they're Darkseid.

I figured as much, that is why I never considered that to be the same as playing a real Baldur's Gate game.

I know they would not mind. If I tried them and did not like them then I would of course stop. I would not force myself to play them just because they were a gift, just as I would not expect others to do so with any game I gift them. I just meant that I can't really justify any more RPGs, even modern ones with very good feedback, while I still have some unplayed. It is not like Pillars is going anywhere, and by the time I get to playing it I am sure it will be a lot cheaper as well.

Would you suggest I start with Icewind or Baldur's Gate first when I get around to it?
