ddickinson: When I was there last, there were some American (or Canadian) tourists who were complaining at the size of it. They seemed to think that the Globe theatre was the size of a modern arena. They did not consider that there were fewer people 500 years ago, and that very few people would be able to see the shows. The plays are nicely done, quite authentic for the most part.
If you get to see some other shows while you are there, and if you are into ballet, then I can recommend the Royal Opera House. The shows they put on are wonderful.
To be honest, that's kind of amusing. I especially find it fun to consider that theater back then was not at all like theater nowadays. Half the time, people wouldn't even be watching the play - they'd be buying food, shouting or consorting with whores. Of course, when one considers that the choice of entertainment was between bear baiting and the theater, it seems somewhat less odd. If you get to see some other shows while you are there, and if you are into ballet, then I can recommend the Royal Opera House. The shows they put on are wonderful.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll probably not be able to see much outside of what is planned, as we already have a rather large number of plays scheduled, and I'll only be in London itself for one day. The rest of the week I'll be spending in Stratford upon Avon. I wish I had time to see more! I've been to England before, but there's always so much to see and so little time.
