Well nowadays indie is only a marketing phrase - indie games should be criticised the same way bigger games are criticised. But you're right. The indie tag often saves developers/games from valid and frankly needed criticism.

Even more true now that indies are charging more and more for their games, some even getting close to the AAA price range. Sadly very few, IMO, are worth the asking price when you compare it to other games you can get for that same price.

That is not coincidental. Freedom Planet started as a Sonic fan-game that eventually evolved into its own thing. The main character's design was intentionally made to look like Sonic and only later got a few touches here and there to give it a slightly more distinctive look.

I think the whole optimization thing depends exclusively on the ability of the developer.

I tend to agree, true the engine plays a part, but most of the responsibility goes on the programmers, which is why games on the same engine have different specs, due to the skill of the developers. Sadly the indie tag has given way for a big drop in the quality of games these last few years, with so many bad practices forgiven just because they are "indie".
