ddickinson: Hi!

Your maps are beginning to look great. I hope you had a good weekend?

Do you have anything romantic planned next week for Valentines Day?
Thank you. Yeah, not too bad, just the usual.

I was just talking to my girlfriend about our plans, probably just a nice home cooked meal and desert. I'd like to be able to do more but unfortunately money doesn't allow.
Still, can't really beat a nice night in together :)

You?

My favorite show :-) (Such an old clip... I can't believe the show started 4 years ago. It still seems so new to me.)

How are you doing?
I love the show as well, and Louise is my favourite character. I only started watching it recently, it was Crewdroog's avatar that brought the show to my attention. It's definitely my new favourite cartoon. Sadly it's not shown here in the UK, so I have had to watch the episodes online.

I'm doing okay. I had another day with my partner's family, which was so draining. Luckily I'm back home tomorrow, just one more night and I can go home and hopefully not see the bunch of snobs for a long time.

My mother is coming home from hospital tomorrow and I'm so exited to have her home. She will need a few months of care at home, and she needs walking sticks at the moment, but at least we will have her home.

You don't need money when your are with the person you love. I'm sure a nice romantic night at home is just as special. Do you go in for the cards and the flowers?

I love getting my partner flowers (and getting flowers in return), but I'm not big on cards. I don't need some cheap piece of paper to say something so important. We are having a nice meal at home as well. Originally we were going to a nice restaurant, but we are going to help my dad cook a nice meal for my mother on Valentines Day, as she will be back home with us and he has missed her terribly. He is just a big softie at heart and wants to give her a romantic night. I don't mind having a nice night in, especially as it will give me the chance to help my parents have a nice day. Valentines Day is never something big for me, we often spend nice night at home with some wine and a nice meal, so it's almost like a regular night. I don't mind the whole Valentines Day thing, but I feel it's just too commercial and puts too much pressure on people. Who needs a day to say how you feel when you can do that all year long. :-)

I don't have any romantic plans, but we will make a nice meal & a homemade cheesecake for. dessert We've already decorated a bit and brought flowers home. My mother's birthday is close to Valentine's Day, so we make a slighter bigger deal out of it for her sake. :)

Couldn't put it better myself :)

We don't really do flowers. We occasionally do cards but of late have pretty much stopped.. why spend £3 or £4 on a card that either gets thrown out or shoved in a drawer because you don't want to throw it out.. these days we just go into the shop and pick the cards out and show them to each other but don't buy them XD

That sounds nice :)

I do agree about it being too commercial, I think this sums it up nicely really.
Hello dd,
Boy o boy o boy,Valentine's Day.Went to see where it originated from, found no conclusive evidence.
All different ideas as to where it came from.....

Found this for the Ladies:-)
Story of St. Valentine
"The story of Valentine's Day begins in the third century with an oppressive Roman emperor and a humble Christian Martyr. The emperor was Claudius II. The Christian was Valentinus.
Claudius had ordered all Romans to worship twelve gods, and had made it a crime punishable by death to associate with Christians. But Valentinus was dedicated to the ideals of Christ; not even the threat of death could keep him from practicing his beliefs. He was arrested and imprisoned.
During the last weeks of Valentinus's life a remarkable thing happened. Seeing that he was a man of learning, the jailer asked whether his daughter, Julia, might be brought to Valentinus for lessons. She had been blind since birth. Julia was a pretty young girl with a quick mind. Valentinus read stories of Rome's history to her. He described the world of nature to her. He taught her arithmetic and told her about God. She saw the world through his eyes, trusted his wisdom, and found comfort in his quiet strength.
"Valentinus, does God really hear our prayers?" Julia asked one day.
"Yes, my child, He hears each one."
"Do you know what I pray for every morning and every night? I pray that I might see. I want so much to see everything you've told me about!"
"God does what is best for us if we will only believe in Him," Valentinus said.
"Oh, Valentinus, I do believe! I do!" She knelt and grasped his hand.
They sat quietly together, each praying. Suddenly there was a brilliant light in the prison cell. Radiant, Julia screamed, "Valentinus, I can see! I can see!"
"Praise be to God!" Valentinus exclaimed, and he knelt in prayer.
On the eve of his death Valentinus wrote a last note to Julia, urging her to stay close to God. He signed it, "From your Valentine." His sentence was carried out the next day, February 14, 270 A.D., near a gate that was later named Porta Valentini in his memory. He was buried at what is now the Church of Praxedes in Rome. It is said that Julia planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of abiding love and friendship. On each February 14, Saint Valentine's Day, messages of affection, love, and devotion are exchanged around the world."

As I said, I don't really mind it in principle, it's nice to have an excuse to be romantic or make an extra effort for that special someone. What I mind about it is the commercialism, and the pressure it puts on people to do something special, just because its Valentines Day. You shouldn't be forced into it all because some card company commercialised it. Some people seem to treat is as though if you don't do anything extra special, then that means you don't love the other person, which is just silly.

Greeting, o man of the future! :-)

How has your weekend been? I hear you are to be the next target for the 100 club. If we set a target for next week, we have 7 days to get you 20 rep points, which is definitely doable.

I am just going to bite my tongue in regards to about three-fourths of that and say two things -

1. If I ever need a corpse to remind me to love, cherish and be devoted to my partner?
I don't fucking deserve them.

2. It's amusing to see a story (and it's pleasant enough, I guess) get turned into cards for people who can't or won't express themselves, plants that'll die in a matter of days (something pretty decaying into rotten shit, an often fitting symbol for relationships), mass-produced, overpriced candy to stuff your face with, restaurants to eat at because people don't give enough of a shit to actually learn to cook something for their partner, and an occasion for pressuring significant others into having sex. -laughing hard-

adaliabooks: Edit: And this is what I've been working on for the last few days. I've re jigged the basics of my world generator, instead of basing it on just random noise I've generate continents based on spherical noise. It's not quite tweaked yet but I'm already pleased with the results, it's less broad strips of land and more continent like. Plus it's more flexible and can generate more specific types of maps (or will do once I finish it).
Hey Adalia :)

So I'm guessing you are not a fan of Valentines Day? :-)

I'm not keen on cards for any occasion, so I don't usually buy them. I enjoy flowers, even if they die. It's nice to have some pretty flowers that smell nice and brighten the place up. Your analogy about them decaying is a perfect analogy for life in general, and for a relationship. We meet someone that fills our lives with joy, but that will not last forever, as everything has to end. But that does not mean we should not enjoy it while it lasts. What would be the alternative? To live in a bubble and never enjoy the good things in life, but still end up the same. The destination is the same for all of us, so there is nothing wrong with trying to enjoy the journey. I have never gone for the over-priced trinkets and candy, and I enjoy a nice meal out. We cook at home all the time, and it's nice sometimes to have a break from the same four walls. But the day (or any day for that matter) is no different, whether we spend it at home or a nice restaurant. It's the person we are with that makes any day special, not the commercial aspects of it. As for the last part, well you speak for yourself, who needs to pressure our partners for such things. ;-)

I'm working on a fantasy grand strategy game, still just at the map / world generator at the moment as I've restarted a few times. Pretty pleased with it so far though.

The dreaded house cleaning. It must be hard work with the owlets there to keep it messy. :-)

A lot of people don't like valentines day, due to the commercialise and the points Crow mentioned. I can take it or leave it. I just use it as an excuse to be extra romantic, but I don't need a day to be romantic, so it's almost like a normal week. I did mention my planes a little earlier, let me know if you can't find it and I will tell you again.

Is it that obvious? ;)

I don't mind flowers, I just don't like the bullshit way in which they're utilized.
Which of course goes back to not being a fan of the day itself.
As for the last part, that tactic/approach/whatever is something to avoid.
Not a big fan of pressuring anyone to do anything in general.

Additional - if you like Bob's Burgers, check out Archer if you haven't already.
Bob's voice actor is the star of that show. They even did a Bob's Burgers/Archer crossover for one episode.
Love that show, need to catch up.
