What do you think of the weekend sale?

l0rdtr3k: I thought fans liked the fact that GW pretends that the Squats never existed.
avatar
ddickinson: The Wikis are actually a nice place to read up on the lore. But keep in mind it is often updated to reflect the horrible changes that GW keeps doing. Like killing off the Squats and pretending they never existed to begin with.
avatar
l0rdtr3k:
Yes and no. I am in a no man's land about them.

Personally I agree with some of GW's old designers. The squats never had a distinct personality neither did they fit well within the universe. They were underdeveloped, no more than dwarves IN SPACE. Take a normal dwarf, give him power armour and a chain axe, and that was it. But then again, Rogue trader, the basis for what would become warhammer 40K, was basically warhammer IN SPACE.

Think about it. As the imperium developed more and more into a absolute xenophobic repressive totalitarian theocratic regime, the squats becamer harder to justify.

As the imperium exists today, when the squats were encountered the squats were encountered they would have given two options, submit or die. It's the only reason why Ogryns and Ratlings are allowed, because they submit to proper humans and are treated little better than slaves. Ogryns are both too useful and dumb to realize they're used as cannon fodder and ratlings... have practically disappeared from the lore as well, but it's more likely that no one cares about them. A proud race of headstrong and wilful "mutants" by inquisitorial standards, unwilling to accept imperial rule would have led to a crusade against them. If we keep in line with current imperial lore and mindset.

As Warhammer 40K developed into its own thing, the squats were scrubbed to make it look less like simply warhammer in space. Which begs the question of why the hell they included the necrons which are basically tomb kings . Pray they haven't decided to include skaven yet. These things just happen and I don't personally regret it. But there will always be people who mourn their passing.

Hey there agent, interesting comparison. Do you also become an instrument of murder when dropped in water?

I think that world of goo is a fine puzzle game.

j0ekerr: ...
I agree mostly with what you say. But the Squats were loyal servants of the Emperor and the Imperium. They were great craftsmen who forged giant war machines for the Emperor and his Imperium, the Leviathan, for example.

But okay, lets say that they are not compatible with the way they wanted the game to go, that's fine. It's silly, but lets go with it. The main problem people had when they were removed was that GW erased any reference to the from all the lore. They also punished fans at game tournaments who still used them. Had they written them out in a giant battle against a Hive fleet, or a Chaos invasion, or even that they turned on the Imperium and were the victims of an Exterminatus, then maybe the fans would have been okay. But to just erase them completely, knowing they had a large fan base, that was what annoyed a lot of people. Remember that they had a lot of fans who has spent a lot of money building up Squat armies and they were quite popular among parts of the fan base.

Okay. Is it just me, or do all of them look like women/girls? Are they supposed to be all women? Or is that just Japan being creepy and making the guys look just as feminine as the girls?

I was under the impression that not only were they not part of the imperium, but that they didn't even accept the emperor as the one true God to be worshipped.

I stand corrected, and yet validated at the same time. It is is easy to infer from the wiki entry that they were part of the imperium in name only and still remained pretty much independent, and would only have given a cursory token glance at the cult imperialis, allowing the ecclesiarchy to build their eye-sore churches but not bothering attending the services.

Current imperial lore would never have accepted this agreement, lest it give other worlds ideas. The thing is, according to fluff, worlds try to secede from the imperium all the time, and they often end up facing the wrong end of the lance batteries of a fleet of imperial heavy cruisers. The High Lords of Terra have no problems decreeing exterminatus of any world that dares to claim independence to make an example of anyone harboring similar ideas.

But I totally agree, the whole, writing them out of existence thing is a dick move. Even though apparently there is a sort of hand-wave explanation that they were eaten up by a tyrannid hive fleet. But they seem rather wary of putting it down and is only vaguely refered to. Then again, GW has a long history of making dick moves. Like cancelling necromunda and gorka morka.

PS: And google marimite. hint: it's lesbian approved.
