CarrionCrow: Oh yeah, boatloads of it at this point.

Would say it depends on how well the mechanic and overall progression are handled. If it's done badly, it might as well get ripped out entirely, since it's just annoying then.
What game have you been playing that has you so annoyed?
avatar
ddickinson: So no wild snails? I guess that means your area will be spared when the French invade, as they will only invade where there is food. Unless you have frogs, then you are still at risk. :-)
I'm told frog legs are a delicacy.
I'm also told that stewed chickpeas are delicious.
And that callos are actually a delicatessen being rediscovered by the great chefs of the "nouvelle cuisine"
I say I'll stick to pork chops.
PS: I have enjoyed fried squid subs on ocassion.

ddickinson: I did not know that, but then rouge like games are not really something that appeals to me.

As far as I know, they are called rogue like (or rogue lite etc), based on an older game called Rogue. That is about all I know. :-)

I understand that, I get that it is for a certain type of gamer, but I just thought they could increase sales by adding a simple option to control how "rogue like" the game is. Probably not viable, but just something I always wondered as I have seen a few games over the years that looked interesting, but I was put of due to the rogue like elements.
Actually, many modern roguelikes do offer a lite mode. Or simply do away with the most I'm-going-to-climb-a-clocktower-with-a-rifle-inducing mechanics that are in fact the most roguish element of the genre.

Well I have crocodile and kangaroo meat in my freezer to try when I am feeling a little better, but I am not sure they are classed as delicacies. I enjoy trying a nice range of new foods now and then, but I think I will pass on snails and frogs. :-)

I did not know that. I guess they also saw the logic of appealing to a wider audience.

ElTerprise: Well there is the Berlin interpretation which defines a roguelike (for some reason i tend to spell it rougelike ^^)
Interesting... that's a lot of stuff. I only have one game like that - Dungeons of Dredmor. And I can turn off the permadeath, so... I guess I don't have any roguelikes :-)

Well i haven't that many games in that genre either - and i actually also have Dungeons of Dredmor elsewhere ^^. And i own ToME (and SOTS the Pit) here as well as some roguelite stuff like FTL (which is awesome but i haven't beat it ...)

I wonder why Dungeons of Dredmor is not on GOG...

But yes was surprised about that definition as well.
I think I had better try to get some sleep, so I will bid you all a good evening and a good night.

Yeah, I've heard FTL be called a "roguelite" ... I guess that just means it has some, but not all roguelike features? (took me I think 54 tries to beat it for the first time :-p)

Dredmor is (or at least was) available DRM-free. So I don't think DRM is what is keeping it from showing up... Could be anything else I guess.

Well i guess so. It has permadeath and the world is randomly generated (which seems to be the rogue thing in many roguelike/roguelite/roguelike-like games) and while sank a lot of time into it i still haven't managed that - no matter how hard i tried adn that game can be a real dick at times :P

Maybe it flies under the radar? Can't be too niche, eh?

I'm starting to get sick of the word rogue ;-p And yeah, FTL can be a real evil and miserable dick. Still, I'm addicted to it :-)

That would be my guess.

Yes me too (a randomly-generated world with rogue-like elements my ass :P). Yes it is indeed addictive. I still play it now and again.

But we already have some of the games here....
I'm off too.
Hurm my current favourite series has a new chapter out?
I'm reading it in the bed.

(Gosh I love mah nook!)
And motherfucking Ironcast has screwed me over again.

One fight away from the finale, and the piece of shit locks up.

That is soooo frustrating. Each time it happens it rubs your nose in it a bit more. I don't know how many games/runs/levels I've had screw up like that. Go for a walk and yell at some things (rocks, trees, small children), then come back all relaxed, and kick the bastard's teeth in if it does it again. :-)

That sucks. But that's what you were talking about before yes?
How far back did you end up?
