ddickinson: I remember reading something about (some) guys not liking to play a female character. Don't get me wrong, many don't mind and some prefer it, but there are those who don't. You have to understand that many developers only care about a certain age range (often teens to college/university age), and it is that age range that seems to not like playing as women (generally speaking). There was a game, which I can't remember off the top of my head, that had a female leading lady, but they still put a man on the cover as when they did a survey the gamers preferred the guy on the cover over the woman. I think it was a Bioshock game, but I can't be sure.

On the flipside, plenty of people really liked playing as Laura Croft so they could stare at her pixely features all day :-p

Regarding switching the voice, I forgot they actuall did do that for the sequel, which always pissed me off. The new voice was terrible (despite being one of the most famous voice actors, Jen Taylor. It just didn't fit.)

The original lady could come back, but they never asked her, they chose some Hollywood actress to do it instead. And recently Metal Gear Solid got rid of the guy who voiced the game for years in exchange for some Hollywood actor.
