AgentBirdnest: That whole "God/Lord/Jesus/etc. is watching" line was pretty effective on me. I think most of my friends were able to forget or ignore that, but that was always in my head. I kinda figured it was worse for people with OCD. (Of course, there is no way to know how everyone else felt though.)
Funny how that works... Okay, Jesus, Santa, Cthulhu and Tony the cereal box tiger are all watching me. Don't any of them have anything better to do? I'm pretty boring, ultimately, there has got to be better shit to check out. The whole omniscience thing should be like TV with roughly 7 billion channels. There's variety.
It's a silly self-importance thing. "Of course the lord is watching, they are personally invested in me! Muh spirital growth is important, they wanna see how it's going, keep me on the right path!"
No they don't. If they're there, they do not give half a flying shit. You aren't that interesting. You're saying an omnipotent power, a true master of the universe, cares about whether you drink coffee or not, jerk off or not, think about cheating on your spouse or not, go to church while wearing the right clothes and saying the right things or not? Get over yourself.

akhliber: Yeesh, so sorry you've had to deal with that. My mom's parents were very strict Southern Baptists, which is pretty big on all the judgment stuff. Fortunately, my parents are pretty open-minded, and aren't bothered by the fact that I'm not religious myself.
Never been to a wedding? I'd say you're missing a lot, but I'm quite honestly not fond of them. Too stressful, and usually too formal. ;)
Southern Baptists seem to be about as strict as Mormons, yet somehow they have always gotten along horribly. I have no idea why that is. Competing to be the most strict? :-p Never been to a wedding? I've been to receptions, but am not allowed to see the actual ceremony. I guess that's fine, because I can skip straight to the food :-)

A lot more than 7 billion channels in Mormonism. Worlds are "without number", and the same god watches over them all. (Yes, that means humans on other planets in other star systems. Who learn about Jesus dying on a far-away planet called "Earth".) Okay, Jesus, Santa, Cthulhu and Tony the cereal box tiger are all watching me. Don't any of them have anything better to do? I never got the sense of comfort, or felt like anyone was watching to look out for and take care of me. I was only scared shitless that someone was watching, which gets old after 20 years.
Glad I chose the right path for myself... Eventually... Well, I guess 20 isn't too old. Could have been a lot longer and did a lot more damage.

This would be like being told when I went to church as a kid, "you're not allowed to attend the youth ministry, but you can come hang out in the play room for some billiards and foosball afterwards." Unfortunately, this isn't what I was told... instead it was, "you're not allowed to come to church to use the pool tables unless you're actually attending the youth ministry." Ah, well. ;)

It's self-importance again. That's how every entity in the multiverse has undoubtedly heard of their supposed leader. Yes, it could've been a lot more harmful. But you did well. It's not easy to be sane when people are actively mindfucking you all the time.
(And yes, I'm willing to bet there's a voice in your mind that'll tell you how sane you're not when you read that. But given your level of self-awareness, you're pretty far from being a lunatic.)

Hahaha... That's a good way to put it. I guess I should consider myself lucky :-) CarrionCrow: Yes, it could've been a lot more harmful. But you did well. It's not easy to be sane when people are actively mindfucking you all the time.

I actually feel totally sane, at least when it comes to my beliefs/lack of beliefs. (As for other areas that are mostly out of my control, my sanity can definitely be called into question.) I don't have any lingering guilt or questions about religion - which is something that other people that I know still have a problem with after leaving the religion. Unrelated : this is turning out to be one plucked up pumpkin I'm carving. Perfect :-)

I figured as much. Was referring to that second part. Unrelated : this is turning out to be one plucked up pumpkin I'm carving. Perfect :-)
That brings me back to the word Stilton used - indoctrination. Not surprised that some people have trouble handling things after they've broken their programming.

Can't decide - should I wait for a sale that's probably coming within a couple weeks, or grab some books that look good that are on sale now?

Survived work nicely and now have a nice fresh hot coffee.
Life is good. :-)
Funny thing, my boss was talking about two clients that got into a religion based argument and how mad she got at them.
I told her I don't get mad at that, with all the shit people were taught as kids it's unavoidable.
A little later she told me I was right and she'd never thought about it that way.
Just seemed to fit with what you guys were saying today.
Agent, I want pics of that pumpkin! :-)
