l0rdtr3k: And you deserve to get hugged.*grabs DD and pleases her with hugs*
But again,if you want a good story set on the Dung Ages of medieval Europe read Berserk. Just be sure to preapare a good supply of Brain Bleach especially when you start the Golden Age Arc.
Is it the same Berserk as the anime series? *return hug*

ddickinson: So… no females is okay, but no Witcher is intolerable. You Germans sure are weird. :-)
We have Merkel. Maybe that explains it.

toxicTom: In Tolkien's case, I would think it refers to the other "Huns". Tolkien has fought in WWI. From the "Western allied" point of view the threats have com from the east most of the time. The Germans, later Russia and the Warsaw Pact.
Tolkien took inspiration from lots of sources much older than the war, but I guess some of that could have influenced him. He was an officer in the war, and he modelled the true hero of The Lord of the Rings after a good old batman (not the super hero kind). :-)

Don't mention the war! I mentioned it once but I think I got away it alright. Oh wait, that is the other war, so we can mention the first one all we want. :-)

I was going to make a joke but I think it would be mean so I won't. :-)

Yes. The manga came(very) much earlier than the anime.
Again, prepare the Brain Bleach when you get to the Golden Age Arc(especially when the Eclipse happens). It's A Song of Ice and Fire in manga form but more crapsack and with more rape.
Now I feel slightly sick... Thank you :-P

Don't hold back! I know you want to say it! Go right ahead! :-P

And why shouldn't we mention WWII?

I do not really tend to read manga, I don't even watch anime that much anymore, and to be honest, I worked at an abuse clinic and saw my fair share of rape victims, so rape in a story tends to be a big turn off for me.

Well if you already know then there is no need for me to say. :-)
(What did you think I was going to say?)

And I am not sure, Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) said we should not mention the war. :-)

No. Just no...
I read a summary of berserk since I was trying to decide to read the manga. And the only thing this and A Song of Ice and Fire have in common are that they are fantasy.

Thank God he didn't also call it by the proper name of Game of Thrones, otherwise he might be dead now. ;-)

ddickinson: I was not really thinking of the flag, but the whole killing Americans thing. That could be deemed very anti-American. :-)

What is it with you lot and changing words. Jam has been called Jam for a VERY long time, yet you all start calling it jelly, and then change jelly to jello. :-)
It usually is anti-American, yes ;-)
I'd be very interested to see more games where you play as other countries fighting America. It might be a nice change in perspective.

Blame the Moomins for the Jello, and ElT for everything else :-p

More rape? A Song of Ice and Fire had enough of that to last me a lifetime. And I've only read the first three books so far.

I had a nice talk with ELT before about how good it would be to have a Call of Duty (1-2)/Medal of Honour type game where you play as the Axis forces against the allies. It would give so many new angles and possibilities. You could start as the Germans invading Europe, then during their fighting retreat back to Berlin. You could do the Normandy landings from the bunkers, trying to defend them then falling back, things like that. True it would remove usual American focused gameplay and often arrogance, but it would be a fun game, with quite a nice take on things. But I guess it would not happen, especially not from US developers who would probably get a lot of bother highlighting the enemy and killing US soldiers and things. But it would be interesting to play a game where you know that in the end you will lose, yet you keep on fighting.

But ELT is German, not American. Who is the American version of ELT? :-)

That is not fair, I never compared it to a manga. :-)

*hugs Moon even though Moon won't hug back*

Both on them are set in a Dark Fantasy that is really a crappy place to live and deconstructs a lot of tropes related to the fantasy genre. What I love about Guts is that he has a very questionable moral compass. After reading the Golden Age arc(pretty much his backstory) you'll see why.

Miura puts rape in there to show how crappy Midland is a place to live not for fanservice(thankfully) and, unfortunetely, rape was really common on the Middle Ages.
And the series is a pretty good read with interesting characters(with great motivations) and such a beautiful and detailed art.

That is understandable. I just want to hear your opinion (and of course Toms opinion too). Did you feel the rape was included to be entertaining or to make the battles and wars and everything more realistic?

Guts was raped when he was a child because his surrogate father sold him to a pedo, for 3 silver coins. Then there's the Eclipse...
