HypersomniacLive: That's something I'm concerned with, but GOG staffers are not saying which is a bit worrisome. It took them more than a few months to tell us that the function of the GOG Downloader will eventually be incorporated to the client.

I think they only mentioned the integrated downloader because of all the comments that came from them announcing the end of the downloader. I think they intended to just stop support as soon as Galaxy launches, then they changed it to phasing it out instead. That's why I think it may not end up being as completely optional as they say.

I can't remember the exact thread (hopefully another helpful member will know), but they mentioned it a few times. Originally they said they would just abandon it after Galaxy was launched, then they changed it to still be useable, but would eventually be discontinued.

Would say it depends on what kind of message you're trying to put forward - go black for a somber, no-nonsense look, red for the power fins approach, or hot pink for the "I so totally don't want to be here, you have no idea" message. ;)

We kept asking and nagging, nagging and asking for months to no end, and I also think that it was this persisting questioning that led to it being phased out and its features making it into the client, the earlier wording indicated that there was no such intention from the beginning.

It remains to be seen how optional it will be. If their comments about no resources to improve the forum are to go by, I fear a split in the community due to the social features they keep mentioning.

Well, I've never seen a hot pink set in my size, besides it's really not my style...
I was thinking more on the dark red ones, to match my Dinosaur endangered species tie. :)

The whole split in the community part is another thing that doesn't sound nice. But I don't see this being avoidable without removing all the social features from the client. It's might not be too bad, maybe the Galaxy chat will be linked to the PM system, so those who don't use Galaxy can still take part in chats.

That's good to hear. Call me old-fashioned (and crazy), if you want, but I do prefer installing games manually. :P

So do I. I use the downloader normally, except for those times where it keeps giving me the wrong language installer, no matter how many times I change it back to English. Those times I use the browser. I prefer to have the installer files and install games manually, and I like to keep them backed up, just in case GOG blows up :-).

j0ekerr: Ah yes, the 8 inch floppy disk, developed in 1967. But I don't think it ever saw much use at all outside of the proffessional computing industry, since by 1978 the 5¼ one had already crowned itself as its successor.

Btw, aren't floppy disks as vulnerable, if not more, to magnetic degradation as video tapes?

EDIT: Hrrrm, after some digging, that looks a lot like a CRV disc. Making it rather a precursor of the CDR than a floppy.
Yes, given the sleeve (and the Sony) logo, it seems to be more like a prototypical MO disc or something similar. I just went for the biggest disc in the image search results. I do recall seeing a Nashua 8" floppy in my computing days though, and my first inclination was that it was a joke product, like some kind of promotional item. But all too real, it turned out.

I'm sure a lot of floppies are fairly unreadable now. They weren't the greatest for bit redundancy. I backed up all my PC & Amiga floppies to hard drive ages ago, in the days when PCs still came with floppy readers.

Have every single item in my library on my computer, just in case of that exact "blowing up" scenario.

I see much gnashing of teeth and wailing that would impress even a Nac Mac Feegle. But I remain hopefully optimistic.

I'm more interested in the other features than the installer though. Mostly because I know absolutely nothing about them.

I wouldn't put much faith into GOG implementing that, though Firek told me that the PM system will be revamped and stop hiding or missing messages.

The GOG Downloader is just that, a downloader; it has a couple of nice features, like checking for errors while downloading and rectifying them, and in my case makes full use of my bandwidth. So manual installation of games is still what one ends up with.

Right now, they're asking for closed alpha volunteers, so I'd say a whole lot of things are still up in the air. No clue when the overall user base will be able to get their hands on it and see what all it does.
