I'll download them now, I've become curious ... and then I have to wip out my bankcart for space empires (which occording to many is also a must) ;)
Is Age of Empire a 4X game, for example ?...
I'm happy not to be the only cheater kid in there... :">

I've played a lot of Armada and sword of the stars. The other ones I wip out once in a while.
Age of empires is more of an RTS. In a 4X game, you have to explore the vast area in which the game takes place (a galaxy, a planet, ...), find resources to utilize (exploit) to expand further and then, finally, exterminate all opposition through one way or another.
At a first glance, Age of Empires has exploration, rescource gathering, expansion through advancing through the ages and your city, and extermination. But it's not a 4x game ... 4X games often have larger tech trees, with more reserach going on. they are often turn based and there is far more complex management going on through menus and things like that. In fact, you can win in many more ways then just combat, and there is a larger amount amount of diplomacy involved. And the scope is often bigger.
Can someone try too explain this in a clear manner now, please? I'm afraid I'm confusing our wise owl with my incoherent babbling :p

I loved Age of Empires... I wish they add the series on GOG... I like RTS then. I don't know much about "4X" for the moment, but it's quite appealing, so I'll give them a try. (so... Minecraft is not a 4X either... you don't have to "exterminate"... but you definitely have the "exploration" part, and the infinite tech trees... but no... no diplomacy, you're on your own... :D)
(Heh... Civilization is not on GOG ?... õ__ô)
Couple of interesting things in the sale today but I'll probably hold off.
