The first color television in the state of Ohio looked like something you would get if you crossed science fiction with a nightmare. Several feet wide and more wires than a box of rice has grains.
After an hour or two of fiddling one could get something resembling a color picture.
How do I know this you ask? That Rube Goldbergian creation was in my living room! ;)
My dad was one of the many co-engineers who invented the thing. He worked for the station that first broadcast color TV in Ohio, US. :)

Sadly not, lost all my photos in the flood we had here '08, about the only thing I wished i'd 'taken a swim' to try to save. ;/

I shall regale you with the tale of how my uncle helped a frenchman by the name of Lumière create some newfangled contraption.

However like a certain german said: "But that is another story and shall be told another time."

I believe that approximation of colour would be what best described a colour picture in 1953. Whatever that was, it was probably a prototype, and certainly I doubt it adhered to the NTSC standard.

It also reminded me of these folks, that's the sort of contraption they'd create.

I know this will probably only be relevant to UK and US users (but it's possible many of them were shown elsewhere), but I was wondering how many of the childrens TV show introductions you recognise. Out of 25 I remember 22 of them. The ones I have never seen before were The Centurions, The Mysterious Cities of Gold and the Star Wars Droids cartoon.

I only had to hear one note to know what the first show was. That is one of the best songs in history. You never forget it.

I think many of the cartoon were made before I was born as well, but I remember seeing them on TV, usually while my brothers watched them on a Saturday mornings. I think as many were US shows that it took several years for them to come to the UK.

Sorry again for delaying to reply (I know I needn't apologise, but I was away for a while...). Btw, regarding your guess on my age-that's correct, I became 20 in September last year-I thought mentioning the cartoons I mentioned would make my age evident, but oh well... As for not being too old for cartoons, I don't know-I generally don't watch much TV nowadays, only a few series now and then(I'm going to watch "Call the Midwife" later tonight) and prefer to watch DVDs or stuff from Youtube. Reagrding cartoons now, I feel a bit embarrassed to watch them, mainly because I can't enjoy stuff that's too childish anymore(I do enjoy good humour, just not childish one)-as an example regarding mangas, I started reading recently One Piece but just couldn't get into it-found it too childish in terms of plot, action etc and don't get why it gets so much praise, and preferred Vinland Saga instead. I guess then it's down to the individual to determine how old he/she feels...
Regarding the intros quiz, I recognised only Inspector Gadget (it was shown occassionally on TV too, I just forgot to mention it-plus, I didn't remember him with a mustache!) and Cities of Gold (but that's because I found out about that show recently after seeing the recent relevant game in Groupees and HB)-so only 2 of 25-even worse than Birdnest. Talking about shows I forgot to mention, I remembered just now also Arsene Lupin (it was called "Exploits of Arsene Lupin" in french but just Arsene Lupin -I think- in Greek)-this one had an excellent intro(which is linked in the wikipedia article I linked)! Now, that I mentioned it, I feel an itch to watch some episodes of it... I guess it'll pass...

I don't watch too much TV, or even movies really any more. I prefer to read more than I do watch things. I still enjoy cartoons sometimes, I don't mind being silly and a little childish and enjoy some fun cartoons. When visiting my family they often have cartoons on for their kids, and for the most part I hate them, they are so rubbish nowadays, but some are good. Of course, it's all down to the individuals opinions and tastes.

I watch some nice anime now and then (loves watching lots of it growing up, the 90's has some great anime), but again, I find much of the newer stuff to be creepy young (underage?) girls in slutty clothes, really infantile stories (like One Piece, IMO), or the stupid obsession with giant boobs. Again, there are still good ones, but many seem horrible to me now. I have never rally been a reader of Manga, probably because they never used to sell them where I lives, so I guess I missed all that. I do have a few, I got a limited edition box set of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga a while ago.

I thought you might not know many of the cartoons on the YouTube clip, partly due to your age, and also your location and language.
