ddickinson: Good morning, Agent!

How was your day with your friend, did you have lots of fun? Do you have anything nice planned for the day?

*big morning hug*
Morning, Deeds. *big return hug*

It was lovely, as always :-) Never a dull moment with him (because Owl says it is a "him" ;-p) Nothing unusual, but some nice plans... get some fresh air in my lovely canyon, maybe read a book, eat some Speculoos... enjoy the little things :-)

ddickinson: That sounds like a busy week for you, but it's great that by next week your thesis will be handed in and things will be a lot more quiet for you. Are you looking forward to getting your thesis done and out of the way?

I have a bit more paperwork to complete then I have about 8 hours of hard work with probably no breaks to look forward to, but at least it will pay off once the week is done.
Definitely. I'll still have some exams and essays to finish after that, but the thesis is the main thing that's causing me a great deal of stress, and my life will be much easier when it's done. I'm looking forward to having more free time again and not having to worry over it all the time.

I wish you the best of luck! Hopefully the day will fly by and it will be evening before you know it. :)

Thanks. I appreciate that :-)
I just started reading "The Last Full Measure", a historical fiction book about the American Civil War (sequel to "The Killer Angels".) I received it as a gift about 3 years ago, but had to pack it in a box because I moved, then forgot about it until recently :"|

I know how that feels, it's wonderful to get it submitted and have that heavy burden lifted of your shoulders.

Thank you, I have a few days like this this week. I have been getting a lot done first thing in the morning, then a few hours of paperwork and stuff like that in the morning (partly so that I get some time to chat on the forum in the morning with the lovely regulars :-)), then the afternoons and evenings are spend doing some proper work again. Saturday will probably be the hardest, as we try to get everything finished so that next week we can go back to normal for a while.

That sounds like a perfect job, one that you are enjoying, that is not too taxing, and that can fit around your classes.

I am not always too keen on historical fiction myself, I tend to prefer my history non-fiction, but I know that people enjoy them and I hope you are liking the books.

Can I ask you a question about US history? In US schools, are you taught that during the War of Independence that the US were "slaves" to the British and were fighting for your freedom? I know you are not taught the real reasons behind the war, because it is a lot less romantic than the whole repression and freedom reasons that is in almost every US book and movie about the war, but I was not sure if you were actually taught that you were "slaves".

The reason I ask is that a few days ago my brothers were trying to find a scene from one of the games they used to play and they were watching trailers of games on Youtube, and I just saw a very strange trailer for an Assassin Creed game. Basically, the trailer seemed to be set during the American war of independence, but it has such a ridiculous line in it that it made me laugh. I know it is just a silly game, but I was curious if that is the kind of thing movies and games imply in the US.

What I found funny about this line was that the Americans were in no way slaves, but in the clip you have Washington (at least I think that is who it was) saying all this stuff about not being slaves to the British and the usually stuff about America fighting for freedom (but none of the real reasons the war was fought, such as Americans wanting slavery, religious freedom to have all their cults and things, and of course, money.), and yet Washington himself, and pretty much all of the other "founding fathers", owned many African slaves. Another thing to note is that many of the Southern states in American only really joined in the war on the side of the Americans due to Britain wanting to end slavery, but the Americans, and especially those in the south, did not. In fact, it was nearly 100 years later when America would end slavery. So it just seemed silly to me that they would make it sound like the Americans were slaves, owned by Britain and who were valiantly defending their very liberty, despite the fact this was not the case, and blatantly ignoring the irony of the American leader proclaiming freedom while so many Americans owned literally thousands of actual slaves.

No, we were never taught that Americans were "slaves" to the British. The topic of slavery was always entirely left out.
To our knowledge, the war was fought because the British forced us to worship the same religion as the King, and because they were charging us too much for tea... and just "freedom" in general, but nothing to specific... I've always found the "freedom" argument quite odd... Many of the founding fathers were slave owners.

I honestly don't know too much about the topic. I'd like to learn more in the future. I know a decent amount about US history, but only from 1850-present... because I'm lazy ;-p

On the other hand, we always learn that our civil war was fought to free/keep the slaves... We don't talk about slavery when we should, and we do when we shouldn't...

AgentBirdnest: ...
Thank you for the response, I was just curios why the Ubisoft trailer would use that wording, and I was curious if that was how games and movies were portraying it these days. Some of the reasons are correct, Most of Europe was against all the new religions and cults that were appearing (many settlers had fled Europe to practice their own religions). Some day if you wanted we could discuss this more over chat, as I find it's a touchy subject and can just lead to debates and that would not be good in the conversation thread, they can also get quite heated, which is not what I would want. I am not too up to date on the US Civil War, but it was partly due to the issue of slaves, so it makes sense to discuss slaves then.

Are the books you reading based around facts, or are they just fiction set in the period?

(I will also stop doing these long posts that can be seen as controversial, like my earlier discussion with adaliabooks, as it keeps killing the thread. :-))
